As a Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmic Surgeon at and Moorfields Eye Hospital. Mr. Henderson is one of three dedicated paediatric vitreoretinal surgeons in the , bringing world class expertise to our department. 👁️

A baby boy has become the first child in the UK to undergo in-utero surgery for complex gastroschisis, marking an important step forward in the treatment of this rare condition, where a baby’s intestines develop outside the body.

Achieved through an international collaboration between Texas Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital and KU Leuven, this feasibility study brings together the expertise of Professor Paolo De Coppi and Professor Stavros Loukogeorgakis to explore new ways to improve outcomes for babies with the most severe forms of gastroschisis by treating the condition before birth.

This remarkable achievement demonstrates the power of global collaboration, clinical expertise and pioneering research in pushing the boundaries of what is possible for children and young people.

What are the chances of finding your best friend in ? This , we’re celebrating the incredible friendship of Hollie Beattie and Hollie Mistry, who before 2023, didn’t the other existed! 👭

After undergoing double lung transplants at , Hollie B received a double lung transplant, while Hollie M received an incredibly rare heart and double lung transplant.

Their friendship started with a simple, handwritten note slipped under an ICU door from Hollie B, ending with: “PS. Wanna be friends?” 📝

Since that moment, they’ve been inseparable.

Today, they are thriving, celebrating transplant anniversaries, and proving that friendship knows no distance, each year they celebrate their transplant anniversaries together, and our wonderful GOSH transplant team even schedules their checkups at the same time so they can reunite! 🏥✈️

"Every day felt like a race against time..."

Imagine watching your child’s sight slip away, struggling to read or recognize faces. For Dragana, watching her daughter, Charna, battle a rare, progressive genetic sight-loss condition was heartbreaking.

But hope prevailed. Charna became the first child from to travel to International for a pioneering, sight-saving gene therapy.

What followed was a beautiful story of patient-focused, compassionate care. The team didn’t just treat Charna's sight; they cared for her heart. Amidst clinical assessments, they made sure Charna could sing in a Christmas choir, laugh, and just be a child.

Today, Charna is home, celebrating new milestones and joyfully telling her doctors she now has "two eyes again."
Reflecting on their journey, Charna’s mother, Dragana, shared this message of hope:
💬 "My message to other parents is simple: keep going and keep believing. You have to fight for your child's future, because every possibility is worth pursuing."

We’re celebrating an extraordinary milestone: 25 years of gene therapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital 🎉

Since delivering the UK's first gene therapy treatment in 2001, clinicians and researchers have helped transform the lives of more than 135 children with rare and life-threatening conditions.

What began as a pioneering clinical trial between GOSH and UCL, has grown into a world-leading programme that is giving children the chance to grow up, go to school, and look to the future with hope.

One of those children is Rhys Evans, the first child in the UK to receive gene therapy for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), a rare condition that left him without a functioning immune system and unable to fight everyday infections.

At the time, treatment options were extremely limited. Treated at just one year old, Rhys is now 25 and has been able to do so many of the things his family once feared might never be possible – attend school and university, spend time with friends, and plan for the future. As Rhys says, "I wouldn't be here without the treatment I received at GOSH."

This achievement is thanks to our patients and families who have placed their trust in research, alongside the clinicians, researchers, laboratory teams, and partners whose dedication has turned scientific breakthroughs into life-changing treatments.

As we celebrate this remarkable anniversary, we're also looking ahead to the next generation of gene therapies and the hope they bring for children with some of the rarest and most complex conditions.

On , we're celebrating the incredible achievements of our Young People's Forum during last year's .

The Young People's Forum (YPF) brings together patients and siblings aged 10 to 21, giving them opportunities to share their experiences, develop new skills and help improve patient care across the hospital.

During the , members stepped into key leadership roles, from Deputy Director of Education and North Thames Genomic Medicine Service Director to Head of Chaplaincy and Volunteer Coordinator.

They didn't just shadow our specialists. They put real-world skills into action by leading meetings, exploring genomic medicine, sharing fresh perspectives, and pitching bold ideas directly to senior leaders, helping to shape the future of patient care. 💡💚

What can we say except… thank you. 💚

A huge thank you to our patient Bella, her sister Luna, and Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Catherine Laga‘aia for officially opening the Disney Reef at last week.

The stars of Disney’s live-action Moana surprised Bella and Luna with a special visit to the new Moana-inspired play area in the hospital, creating memories the family will never forget.

Bella had life-saving brain tumour surgery at age four. During her recovery, she faced challenges with speaking and walking. But through it all, she formed a special connection with Moana, repeatedly singing songs from the film, something her mum, Sophie, credits with helping her regain her speech.

The Disney Reef is dedicated to the children and young people of GOSH, and to the members of our Young People's Forum (YPF), a group of GOSH patients and siblings whose ideas and experiences helped bring the Disney Reef to life.

Designed with accessibility at its heart, the Disney Reef has been created to support a wide range of sensory, physical and medical needs. The space was shaped through collaboration between our charity-funded Play team, current and former GOSH patients and families, hospital experts, and Disney designers.

This is more than a play space. It's a place for imagination, joy and connection for every child who visits GOSH.
