Causes of Vaginismus ⁉️Hello, I'm Dr. Wafaa ElTantawy, Consultant in Psychos*xual Medicine, Relationship Therapist and Women's Health Specialist in London.
Vaginismus is a condition where the muscles around the vaginal opening tighten involuntarily, making pe*******on difficult or painful. The causes are often a combination of psychological and physical factors, and they vary from one woman to another.
Main Psychological Causes:
- Fear and Anxiety: Fear of pain, worry about s*x, or general stress that puts the body into "protection mode."
- Past Negative Experiences: Painful attempts at in*******se, uncomfortable s*xual experiences, or previous s*xual trauma.
- Cultural and Upbringing Influences: Negative beliefs about s*x, strict warnings during childhood or adolescence that link intimacy with shame or pain.
- Relationship Issues: Emotional pressure from a partner, lack of trust, or feeling emotionally unsafe.
- Mental Health Factors: Ongoing anxiety or depression that affects the body's natural responses.
Main Physical Causes:
- Infections and Inflammation: Recurrent vaginal infections, thrush, or vaginal dryness.
- Hormonal Changes: Especially after childbirth or during menopause.
- Injuries or Medical Procedures: Tears during delivery, pelvic surgeries, or previous injuries.
- Muscle Tension: Chronic tightness in the pelvic floor muscles due to constipation, stress, or poor habits.
In many cases, a minor physical issue can trigger the problem, and then anxiety reinforces the muscle spasm, creating a persistent cycle.
Understanding your personal causes is the first important step toward effective healing.
