Scar Maturation & Management
Scar outcomes vary significantly by skin type. In lighter skin , scars typically progress from red to pink, ultimately fading to white or faint flesh tones.
In skin of color, a stronger inflammatory response frequently leads to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation , presenting as dark brown or gray discoloration. With proper care, however, excellent aesthetic results are achievable in all skin types.
To optimize scar healing, we recommend adhering to the POPS protocol—a comprehensive, evidence-informed framework:
· P – Protein Intake: Ensure adequate dietary protein to supply the essential amino acids required for collagen synthesis and tissue repair.
· O – Oxygen & Breathing Exercises: Maintain optimal tissue oxygenation through diaphragmatic breathing and gentle cardiovascular activity, which enhances perfusion and supports cellular regeneration.
· P – Posture & Body Mechanics: Adopt ergonomic positioning and movement patterns to minimize tension and shearing forces on the healing wound, thereby reducing the risk of scar distortion.
· S – Smile & Positive Psychological Input: Cultivate a positive mental state post-surgery. Emerging evidence suggests that reduced psychological stress correlates with lower cortisol levels and a more balanced inflammatory cascade, potentially improving the quality of scar maturation.
