In a healthy intimate relationship, both people can feel deeply connected while still having their own sense of self, making independent choices and maintaining parts of life that are not entirely shared. Enmeshment describes a dynamic in which those boundaries become blurred, leaving less room for each person’s individual identity and autonomy.
While expectations around closeness vary across families and cultures, the dynamic can become difficult when someone’s identity or autonomy is compromised. Therapy can help create clearer boundaries without losing the love and connection within the relationship.
