Recognising when you need help is an important skill 🌟

Our students have been creating their own “help” strategy cards to support self advocacy, from asking for help, to saying “I don’t understand”, to knowing when they need a break or more time. Building confidence to communicate these needs is a powerful step towards independence and successful communication 💬

✨ Introducing Occupational Therapy at West London Speech & Language Therapy ✨

We are delighted to welcome Joana to our multidisciplinary team and to begin offering Occupational Therapy appointments from our clinic.

Joana is a paediatric Occupational Therapist with experience supporting children and young people across mainstream schools, SEMH settings, complex needs provisions, and private clinics in both the UK and the Philippines.

Currently completing a Master’s degree in Sensory Integration, Joana is trained in Sensory Integration, DIR® Floortime, and SOS Feeding. She has a particular interest in supporting children with sensory processing and regulation differences and takes a child-centred, strengths-based approach to helping children participate more confidently in everyday activities.

Occupational Therapy can support children and young people with areas such as:

⭐ Sensory processing and regulation
⭐ Emotional regulation
⭐ Participation in daily routines
⭐ Motor and coordination skills
⭐ Independence and self-care skills
⭐ Feeding and mealtime challenges
⭐ Accessing learning and school activities

Joana works closely with families, schools, Speech and Language Therapists, and other professionals to understand each child’s individual strengths and needs, using a sensory-informed and neurodiversity-affirming approach.

📍 We are now offering a limited number of Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention appointments in our clinic at

Please note that, as we continue to develop our Occupational Therapy provision, appointments are currently available for specific clinical areas only and spaces are limited.

If you would like to discuss whether Occupational Therapy support may be appropriate for your child, please get in touch.

📚 As children return to school this week, it’s worth remembering that regulation and engagement are closely linked.

Many of the challenges staff see in the classroom can be influenced by sensory, motor, cognitive and environmental demands. Small adjustments, such as incorporating movement breaks, offering choices, adapting the environment and maintaining predictable routines, can make a meaningful difference to participation and learning.

These are some of the practical strategies our Occupational Therapist regularly recommends when supporting children and young people in education settings.

What a special day 💛💙

Today we held our “Pay What You Can” Speech & Language Support Day in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity, a cause that means a lot to us as a team.

We were blown away by the kindness, generosity and community spirit shown throughout the day. So many local people stopped by to buy a cake, make a donation, or simply have a chat and show their support. We were also so pleased to meet families who came along for speech and language support for their children, whilst also supporting the charity.

It was such a lovely atmosphere, with sunshine, cakes, conversations, support, and a fantastic team of SLTs coming together for an important cause.

A huge thank you to for allowing us to use their beautiful venue, and thank you to the wonderful Askew Road community for supporting us so warmly throughout the day.

We’d also like to thank for keeping some of us fuelled during the day too ☀️🧋🥙🥪

Thank you to everyone who donated, attended, baked, supported and encouraged us.

This visual from Tony Buzan’s Mind Maps for Kids is a powerful example of how information can be organised in a way that supports understanding and memory.

For students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), mind maps can help because they:
✨ reduce language load✨ make connections between ideas visible✨ support vocabulary learning✨ provide visual structure and sequencing✨ help with recall and organisation✨ break big topics into manageable chunks✨ support expressive language when speaking or writing✨ engage learners through colour, images and layout

It’s exam season 📚✨

Some of our secondary students have been making visual flash cards to support understanding and recall of key themes in texts and practising exam command words.
Using visuals, keywords and colour coding can help make learning more accessible, support memory and build confidence when revising independently.

Good luck to everyone sitting exams at the moment! 🌟

We carried out some fun speech sound work in clinic today 🐍🗣️

A visual timetable helped provide structure and clear expectations throughout the session.

The therapist used a minimal pairs approach to target initial s-cluster sounds such as ‘snow’, ‘slime’ and ‘swing’ by feeding our hungry snake words containing s-clusters 🐍❄️🟢

We also practised the vowel sounds “oo” and “er” within words, before finishing with a well-earned game reward 🎲👏🏴‍☠️
