I see this a lot, especially with women who are trying to eat “well”.

The lunch looks great on paper -protein, plants, healthy fats - but it can still be too small to actually sustain you.

Then mid-afternoon comes and you’re hungry again, picking at things, wondering why you’re still looking for food.

Sometimes there’s nothing to “fix” about your appetite. You just needed a more substantial lunch.

For me, that meant more cottage cheese, some corn and sourdough. For someone else it might be potatoes, rice, grains, beans, or simply more of what’s already on the plate.

The point isn’t bread. The point is adequacy.

Eating well is about what you eat. But it’s also about eating enough.

If you’ve been told you have IBS, it can sometimes feel like that’s the end of the conversation.

But I’m always interested in what might be sitting underneath the label. Why did it start? What’s triggering it? Is there a pattern? And is there anything we can actually do about it?

Sometimes changing what you eat can make a huge difference. Sometimes testing is useful. Sometimes targeted supplements can help. And sometimes it’s about things you might not immediately associate with your gut at all.

There isn’t one IBS protocol that works for everyone, because everyone’s gut (and life!) is different.

For me, it’s about joining the dots and doing what’s actually useful. Not doing everything just because we can.

I’m a nutritionist, but I really don’t think being healthy needs to become another job.

I love the science and I’m endlessly curious about why things happen in the body (I can definitely get a bit geeky about it 😂), but I’m not interested in giving someone a huge list of supplements, foods they can’t eat and 25 things they need to do every day.

Life is busy. We have kids, work, dinners out, holidays, weeks where everything goes a bit wrong… and I want the way I work to fit around that.

For me it’s about figuring out what’s actually going on, what might be driving your symptoms, and then working out what’s genuinely worth doing.

You really don’t have to do everything perfectly to feel better.

And I definitely don’t.

Something I’ve been reflecting on lately in the wellness world.

We can value good ideas without turning people into gurus.

Expertise may earn attention.
Trust should be earned slowly.

With International Women’s Day approaching, it feels like a good moment to reflect on power, trust and integrity — especially in fields that work closely with women’s health.

I don’t have a perfect answer.

How do we stay open to learning from experts without putting them on pedestals?

On of the meals I cooked on the retreat was the classic roast chicken.

You can use thighs, legs, chicken supremes or a whole chicken 🍗

Cover with some Dijon mustard, freshly squeezed lemon and orange juice, soya sauce or coconut aminos if you’re avoiding soya, then surround with quartered tomatoes, mushrooms, chunky onions, thyme or tarragon or both, and a touch of water to ensure you get a nice gravy at the end.

Roast until skin is crispy and juices run clear - or best yet use a meat thermometer to ensure perfect cooking - cooked chicken internal temperature is 74 degrees Celsius.

Enjoy with rice, roasted veggies or potatoes!
