🌿 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY — 10 OCTOBER 2026 🌿

Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change. 💚

Mental health matters. If you’re experiencing stress, worry or anxiety, you deserve to be heard, supported and cared for.

At Vanaspati Herbal Medicine, we believe in taking a holistic approach to wellbeing — looking at the whole person, including lifestyle, nutrition, emotions and the traditional wisdom of herbal medicine.

🌿 Tulsi (Holy Basil) — traditionally valued in Ayurvedic herbalism for its adaptogenic and calming qualities.

🌿 Verbena — traditionally used in herbal medicine as a soothing herb and for relaxation.

🌿 Ziziphus — traditionally used in herbal practices to support calm, rest and emotional wellbeing.

These herbs may be considered as part of an individualised herbal approach to wellbeing, but herbal medicine is not a substitute for professional mental-health care. If anxiety or symptoms of GAD are affecting your daily life, speak with a qualified healthcare professional or medical herbalist.

💚 You deserve to feel better.

🟣Question of the week: “How will you know what’s wrong with my skin?” 🌿

It’s one of the questions I’m asked most, and it’s a fair one. When your skin is flaring, itching or breaking out, you want to know the person helping you understands what’s really going on.

As a qualified Medical Herbalist with a BSc in Herbal Medicine, I’m trained in clinical diagnostic skills. A herbal medicine degree covers anatomy, physiology, pathology and differential diagnosis alongside plant medicine, so I can assess the body as a whole, not just the patch of skin in front of me. Add over 36 years of clinical experience across Western, Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal traditions, and that experience becomes a real advantage.

🟣Why does that matter for your skin?
Skin is often a messenger. Urticaria, eczema, acne, dermatitis, psoriasis and rosacea can all be linked to what’s happening underneath, such as digestion, hormones, stress, immunity, sleep or diet. Creams and quick fixes may calm the surface for a while, but if the root cause isn’t addressed, symptoms often return.

A holistic consultation looks at the full picture:
✨ Your health history and lifestyle
✨ Possible triggers and patterns
✨ How your body systems are working together
✨ A personalised herbal plan aimed at long-term change, not temporary relief

This training also means herbalists can support a wide range of conditions, from hormonal and digestive health to stress and sleep, because we treat the person, not just the symptom. Herbal medicine can also work alongside the care you receive from your GP.

🟣Ready to get to the root of your skin concerns?
Book a free 15–20 minute discovery call to see how I can help. Consultations are available in person in Stanmore and online.

🌿 BERBERIS — A Golden Herb with Centuries of Tradition

Known as Barberry (Berberis vulgaris), this remarkable plant has been valued in traditional medicine for centuries. Its distinctive yellow roots and bark contain berberine, a naturally occurring alkaloid that has become one of the most studied compounds found in medicinal plants. (PubMed)

✨ Traditionally, Berberis has been used for:

• Supporting healthy digestion and the gastrointestinal system
• Traditional liver and gallbladder support
• Supporting the body during inflammatory conditions
• Traditional use for skin concerns and wound care
• Supporting healthy blood sugar and lipid metabolism
• Traditional support for eye, mouth and throat health
• Supporting the body against unwanted microbial activity
• Traditionally used for fever and certain urinary complaints (PubMed Central (PMC))

🔬 Why is Berberis so interesting today?

Modern research has focused particularly on berberine, investigating its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and metabolic effects. Human studies have especially explored berberine in relation to blood lipid levels and insulin sensitivity — although more research is still needed to establish appropriate therapeutic uses for specific conditions. (PubMed)

🏺 A fascinating historical fact…

Berberis has a surprisingly ancient medicinal story. Evidence cited in the scientific literature describes the use of barberry fruit in ancient Assyrian medicine, with references dating to around 650 BC. Berberis was also recorded in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where preparations made from the roots or stems were known as Rasaut. (PubMed Central (PMC))

From ancient healing traditions to modern phytochemical research, Berberis is a beautiful example of how traditional herbal knowledge continues to inspire scientific investigation. 🌿
