Many clients on my Hypnobirthing courses have benefitted from this idea. It helps to conjure up what the imagination can see, hear, feel, and even smell. If the idea of the sea doesn't work for you, what would?

So wrote Julian of Norwich, in the 14th c., who after recovering from a serious illness lived the rest of her life as a religious hermit. You can use this as an affirmation by inserting at the beginning of “I know … that all will be well….” Thinking positive thoughts, and being reminded of them over and over (post-it’s on your fridge?) are SO powerful and can lead to more positive outcomes. Find out more on one of my Hypnobirthing courses. I’d love to show you how. 🙂

People are very curious when I say I teach Hypnobirthing and are keen to know the benefits. Well, there are MANY!

I will start with what I feel is THE most important, especially for anyone giving birth these days.

Fear and anxiety are reduced, or quite simply done away with. When I first gave birth over 37 years ago we didn't have the WWW (World Wide Web). No social media, no-one thrusting their opinions, their "advice" to the general public, telling difficult birth stories - now that was a huge benefit! I went to a yoga class and the teacher said to the two of us who were pregnant - "my ladies always have great births" and she would tell us their stories. Every week. I heard "all my yoga ladies have great births". What a gift that was.

The brain has its own filter, called the RAS (Reticular Activating System) and on my Hypnobirthing Workshops we look at this, how if you focus your atention on positive thoughts/beliefs, your RAS will do everything in its power to show you again and again that these thoughts and beliefs are true. So perhaps now you can see how negative throughts and beliefs get equal treatment, how they can send anyone facing giving birth into a downward spiral.

More to come.......

In my courses Induction is discussed, we look at what it is, why it is offered, the benefits and repercussions and then my groups work together to formulate questions to help them make informed decisions, whether to go ahead or to decline.

St. George's are talking about closing the Carmen Suite - a much-loved, much-used Birth Centre. This will reduce women's choices hugely. Research shows clearly that women who labour and give birth in a Birth Centre have a greater chance of a straightfoward vaginal birth due to the more relaxing environment for one. Also there is the option to use a birth pool.

This is not great news so please sign!

Cesarean Awareness month. (CAM) I've been reading about this campaign, organised by the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN), a non-profit that aims to improve maternal and child health. The topics they are focusing on are:

1) Reducing preventable C-sections
2) Supporting recovery after a C-section
3) Advocating for vaginal birth after a C-section (VBAC)
4) Improving the patient experience of C-section delivery

All good stuff however I find the language really interesting . As an NCT Antenatal teacher and all round birth educator I avoid the term 'C-section', preferring 'Cesarean birth'.

And 'C-section delivery', the saying "Pizza boys deliver pizzas but women birth their babies" comes to mind, mostly ascribed to vaginal birth. And yes I know it's not only 'boys' that deliver pizzas, but... can we not just say "Cesarean birth" rather than 'C-section delivery'?

Do you think it matters?
