I turned out alright 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was a super fussy eater in primary school and I count my lucky stars that I was able to lean on carbohydrates, sugary foods, "beige" foods and snacks to fuel my school day without anyone telling me that these foods were "bad" and weren't "allowed."

This is why nutrition needs to be nuanced. My diet is 1000 X more varied now, but it took me a long time in my teens and early 20's to expand and challenge my food preferences.

It's important not to rule out trying new foods, even as an adult. And it's really important not to get caught out in thinking that your preference is actually a good rule in disguise.

P.s. who remembers writing their lunch order on brown paper bags?

Less is not better, if it is negatively impacting your nutritional wellbeing.

We seem to have lost touch with what a normal, balanced meal looks like. I'll never share a WIEIAD post, however it is concerning when I hear or see small portions being recommended to the masses and people are made to believe that they are eating too much.

You might eat more/less than these photos and that is fine if you hand on heart are an intuitive eater. But if you are reading this and seeing these plates fills you with anxiety or you are afraid to eat more because no one around you is, I see you.

You are unique and you might need to eat differently to your friend, Mum, sister or an influencer you follow. This is okay.

Everyone has different nutritional needs. The purpose of this post is not to compare your intake to mine, but to know that balanced and normal eating exists.

If you are stuck in the messy middle and need a little nudge with my support, our signature 12 week Rule Breaker program starts soon! This might be just the thing you need. Sign up to the waiting list in my bio for a special surprise on registration!

Add, not restrict.

There's a little experiment I use with clients called And-And, which is a tool we implement to help take foods off the magical pedestal they've been put on.

If you struggle with overeating, binge eating or food avoidance, shifting from an all or nothing (black and white) approach to one that is more flexible takes time.

Continuing to engage in actions that fuel back and white thinking, only strengthens the food rules and rigid beliefs about food.

So instead of avoidance or removing foods from your diet, I like to introduce And-And. Pairing an avoided or feared for WITH a safe one. This follows the same concept of adding something to your plate, rather than restricting.

For example, instead of avoiding pizza, can you have pizza AND salad. Add the salad, rather than restrict and avoid the pizza. Then repeat this again, and again, and again.

Has this strategy worked for you?

New statistics on the prevalence of eating disorders were released from Beat today, with estimates showing that 1 in 20 people or 3.5 million people in the UK live with an eating disorder.

Estimates are only that, and it doesn't capture the carers, friends and family whose lives are impacted.

We know that disordered eating falls outside of this as well.

This is a terrifying statistic, given how difficult it is to access treatment on the NHS for an eating disorder and the limited resources and investments going into research and funding care.

We need more resources. We need the culture to shift in our society away from dieting and thin body ideals. We need to respect and be kind to all people, regardless of the body they live in.

Next time you are on the bus, the tube, in the gym, walking down the hallway at work... Remember that eating disorders don't have a "look" and the likelihood is that there are more people that you realise in your life struggling with their relationship with food.

Recovery is possible.

Please, please reach out for help 🙏🏼🦋

Healing your relationship with food is rarely linear.

You have to keep choosing recovery, one mouthful, one decision, one action at a time.

You know a lot about nutrition. So you don't need to see a dietitian.

This is how many of the people I support feel before working together.

The reality is that although providing advice about what to eat is part of my role, it's only a small part. As an eating disorder dietitian, I provide nutrition counselling and that focuses on behaviour change and shifting beliefs about food and body (some of the things keeping you stuck in disordered eating).

I have a toolbox of different skills to support you with:
- challenging food rules
- improve digestive health
- shift beliefs about food and body
- meal planning skills
- body image
- social eating
- flexible eating
- nervous system regulation
- trusting hunger and fullness cues

So here's my little nudge that if you've been wondering if working with a dietitian might be helpful, to reach out and book a discovery call with our team 😊

Do you ever feel like your foundation is a bit wobbly?

RAVES Model: the foundation and framework to support a positive relationship with food, even in tough times.

I often use the analogy of building a house when I speak to clients about the core principles of the RAVES Model:

The foundation (regularity and adequacy)
The walls (variety, eating socially and spontaneity)
The roof (natural eating practices)

If you don’t have a strong foundation i.e. you aren’t eating regularly or adequately, it’s going to be harder to maintain the strength and integrity of the walls and roof, especially if there is a storm (aka life challenges).

A lapse in disordered eating behaviours might be the equivalent of a tile falling off the roof, a brick becoming loose or a crack forming in the cement foundation. A little might not lead to the house falling down, however over time, those cracks and holes might get bigger. In the context of an eating disorder, it might get harder to challenge diet culture and the eating disorder voice because the safety that a strong foundation provides, has weakened.

If you would like to learn more about the RAVES Model - head to the bio to read our latest blog: Understanding the RAVES Model: A flexible framework for eating disorder recovery or DM me “RAVES” and I’ll share the link with you.
