Camilla Ferraro - Dietitian and Nutritionist

Camilla Ferraro - Dietitian and Nutritionist Registered Dietitian (RD) specialising in clinical (interests in oncology/surgical/acute medicine) a Hi there, I’m Camilla and I love good food and coffee.

I love food (and science) so much, that I have dedicated five years to formally studying food and nutrition (Bachelor of Human Nutrition/Masters Dietetic Practice) at university, in addition to the billions of informal hours I spend talking about, cooking, eating and enjoying food. I own more cookbooks then pairs of shoes, and get a thrill out of food shopping (it can be fun I promise!), and traip

sing around farmer’s markets. My approach to food and nutrition is to ‘tread gently and with care’ and I wholeheartedly support a non-diet approach to health and wellbeing (read: I am not into restrictive diets, calorie counting, superfood supplements or prescriptive meal plans of any kind – with the exception of meal plans that may be used in some stages of clinical eating disorder recovery). I am a firm believer in eating and moving in a way that best suits YOUR mind, body and lifestyle; combining principles of intuitive eating and eating behaviour/psychology with evidence-based nutrition science, to help you achieve your own goals. For me, as a dietitian (and human!) it’s all about small, sustainable changes…and becoming more mindful of our actions, rather than obsessive. A gentle approach to nutrition. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the copious amounts of conflicting nutrition information around, and need some clarity AND/OR you would like some individualised advice and support in addressing any concerns relating to your overall wellbeing or management of a specific health condition – then please do get in touch.

...and just like that...Spring feels well and truly here ❤️. Man oh man, a year to date that lockdown was well and truly in force, and I started a new NHS role (in which I still haven’t met most of my colleagues in person! 🤪). Currently on leave from both my jobs, and although I’d so desperately hoped I’d be able to get home to Melbourne to see the fam...I am still grateful for time away from the screen and to be able to just breathe (and drink coffee, and wander)! 🙏🏻The last few months of NHS working have been extremely busy for most of us...and whilst I love my jobs, it does take a mental and physical toll (and I am first to admit 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’ve wobbled 🥴)...BUT I also sit here fully vaccinated and surrounded by epic colleagues, daily - and can’t think of a better organisation to be a part of (though shame we don’t get treated better from the political powers above 🙈). Sending love and hoping to be a bit more present on here this year (it’s always a delicate balance). Camilla ❤️x

WOWSERS! What a year...and little did I know that meeting Melly-bobs and moving in with this chicken...would be just the biggest blessing of a cray cray 2020!! And as I got off Xmas FaceTime this morning with my actual family ( ) - I was immediately filled with a whooshhhh of Christmas love for ALL the special souls that have personally got me through this tough year! It’s been testing (as it has for many)...but London, there is still nowhere I’d rather be ❤️. You all know who you are but I’ve tagged as many of you as I can! Thank you from the bottom of my heart my London fam. A huge Merry Christmas to you all and sending love to all the NHS legends working this Christmas period 🙏🏻❤️

2019 was a relatively sh*te year...don’t even want to fathom what I looked like/was doing in 2010 😳😂?! BUT here’s to ending 2019 on a higher note (just in time)... and roll on 2020! 👌🏻 // Ps - just a random assortment of images, no deep thoughts/reflections to be had at this point. Special mention though to all those who keep me inspired on here ✌🏻and for keeping me caffeinated (sane) always 😎. @ London, United Kingdom

[THE SUNDAY STORIES] Soooo I’ve finally got my writing act together and want to introduce a new little baby: The Sunday Stories.
A (hopefully) weekly post discussing all things mental health, careers, financial stuff, dating/relationships…mixed in with some book chat/recommendations, pop culture/reality updates (if by chance I get cool enough) and perhaps even some health chat (if it feels pressing – as this dietitian is a little sick of talking about health/nutrition in her spare time). With some intervention from experts/those who ‘seem’ to be doing it better?!
The aim is for ‘The Sunday Stories’ to be a conversation starter...rather than just me ranting on about things (though that may happen on occasion if I get excited!) 😂. A forum to talk openly about the many things that keep us up at night, the things that hum away quietly in the backs of our minds, until said anxieties/insecurities decide to rear their ugly head?!...**If you are keen to read more/join in...then link in profile** ♥️

What a project, what a team, what a night?!! // On Thursday, I had the pleasure of being apart of the launch of a very special resource we have been working away on with . A food and nutrition resource targeted to the needs of young adults living with cancer! One that doesn’t shy away from answering the questions and busting the myths patients actually have around food and cancer. What started as a conversation between Hazel , Ailsa , myself, Trekstock and their beautiful ambassadors Sarah and Dani (this time last year!!), has now come to fruition thanks to our epic team (pictured!). We could not be happier to see if out in the world and being read and used! Thank you so much to everyone that has already given us feedback, sent messages and even made my banana bread recipe! 🙌🏻 // As a side note: some of you know that I am returning to the NHS full time and leaving (very sadly) my post at . It’s been a tough few weeks and very mixed feelings but looking forward to continuing work in this space - diving in and supporting cancer patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery, in my new role, and pursuing other projects like this to help those living with cancer! ♥️ Happy weekend. @ London, United Kingdom

Hello 👋🏻 ....

I rarely post photos on here but felt like my recent radio silence from posting on the grid, perhaps deserved some explanation?! 🙈

What started as an accidental ‘I can’t string words together because I’m working too much in the real world’ break from posting...has continued...and continued...until I came to somewhat of a realisation that perhaps this platform isn’t for me any more? 🧐🤷🏻‍♀️

Instagram has changed a lot since I started this account, and whilst I’m forever grateful for the connections I’ve made (many of which have translated in real life!), I’ve realised that this platform was also another channel of extra ‘work’, taking time that could perhaps be dedicated to prioritising rest, fun, relationships, leisure time...?! 😕😬

In the last month, you could say I’ve burnt ‘both ends of the candle’ in many ways, and I think it’s forced me to also consider my use of social media, and whether I want to continue to contribute to the noise in the food and nutrition space on here (even if that’s credible noise?!).

SO, this is not really goodbye but I guess me just fronting up to say I’m not quite sure what I’ll be posting on the grid from now on BUT that I am so grateful for the love and support many of you have shown me (and my work) up until this point.

I’ll likely still pop up on stories regularly (probably posting a mixture of stuff as it fits) and I’d still LOVE to hear from you all, and how you’re doing, but I’ve now come to the realisation that my skills are likely better spent helping people and my clients in real life...which means that posting on here will probably remain haphazard.

Hope you’re having a lovely week wherever you are in the world. Take care.

Camilla ♥️

(ps. tagged are a very very small subsection of some of the beautiful people who have provided their unwavering support and advice to me over the years since starting this account) ✌🏻

[ BODY IMAGE + MENTAL HEALTH ] - The focus of this year’s is BODY IMAGE. And while, I honestly don’t think anyone needs to see another thin privileged, able-bodied, white woman (me🙋🏻‍♀️) posting about this... I do seriously think that the way we talk about ourselves is SO very important, and worth a spotlight 💡
♥️ We know that language matters and that negative self talk and body dissatisfaction is actually linked to increased disordered eating behaviours...and generally an increased likelihood that will treat ourselves like sh*te. You know that harsh self talk, fad dieting and controlling our food, moving our bodies to ‘calorie burn’ or compensate, forsaking sleep etc... Hello, poor self care and decreased mental health 😢
😕 This dissatisfaction is also likely to increase how readily we take on and absorb other people’s opinions regarding our body and appearance. Internalised fat phobia and weight stigma is a real thing and it damages physical and mental health (we have research to prove this!). This is also why increasing DIVERSITY and the representation of bodies across the spectrum of size, race, gender, sexual orientation and age, that we are exposed to in the media, on our phones, in daily life/workplaces, is crucial. When we don’t see bodies we can relate to, we can start to feel that our body is not okay
💄 Obsessing over our physical appearance, body checking, always striving to change and improve our bodies, also results in us being hyperfocused on the external, rather than checking in with our internal. You know...our body’s own physical cues and emotional states? Are we hungry? Do we need sleep? Are we stressed/sad/lonely/angry? Do we need to say ‘no’ to those plans? Do we need to eat something? Feel the sun on our face? The list goes on...☀️
👀 It also means that we become increasingly fixated on changing our bodies, at the expense of all the other important things we could be dedicating our time too. Social justice, volunteering, hobbies, travel, building relationships, contributing to the local community, chilling out with friends, writing books...etc etc etc etc
🧘🏾‍♀️We all have a ‘body image’... CONT’D

26 things I’ve learnt in 26 years 🎂💁🏻‍♀️
Yeah, yeah I know...another one of these lists but humour me as I’ve been bed-bound with a stomach virus for almost 72 hours on my birthday weekend...sooo yeah... got bored 😂
Also I realise I haven’t posted in a while (life has well and truly kicked me in the ass this past fortnight! 🙈) but promise I’ll be back soon (keep sending me your health/nutrition questions!)
1️⃣ that stomach viruses don’t care that its your birthday! 👎🏻🤮🎉
2️⃣ that just when you feel like you’ve got your adulting sorted, life will send you a curveball...that smacks you in the face! ♥️
3️⃣ that London doesn’t subscribe to the left/right commuter etiquette (except on the escalators), charge at people and pray they move?! 🤷🏻‍♀️😤
4️⃣ that buying the cheapest loo paper is never worth it 😜💩
5️⃣ that oat milk is life, and should probably have shares in the company! 🥛
6️⃣ that great friends and patient family are really all that’s needed in life, to pull you through the sh*te! 👯‍♀️
7️⃣ that milk doesn’t come free in the NHS 🤣 cue mini fridges full of 1000 diff milk cartons
8️⃣ that you should not mention you’re a dietitian at dinner parties or on dating apps, unless you want to be inundated with requests for nutrition advice 🙄
9️⃣ that coffee really is life, even if London does quite match Melbourne standards?! ☕️☕️
1️⃣0️⃣ that wearing activewear to brunch is not socially acceptable attire in the UK 🤣
1️⃣1️⃣ that there is only a finite period of time I can keep claiming that those ‘lighter’ hair strands that keep popping up are just ‘sun dyed’ 😭💇🏻‍♀️
.
1️⃣2️⃣ that clothes sizing is absolute BS. I’ve learnt to eyeball the style and ignore the tag. Don’t let an external, arbitrary and highly variable set of numbers define you! 💪🏻
1️⃣3️⃣ that Amazon prime now means I will never afford to buy a house, forget the avo toast! 🏠🤦🏻‍♀️
1️⃣4️⃣ that turning my last name ‘Ferraro’ into a ‘ferrero rocher’ joke will apparently never get old?! 🤣🍫🌰
1️⃣5️⃣ that tea does taste 1000x better in the UK, that hard water is good for something! 👌🏻
