Think you can stop wearing sunscreen when summer ends? Think again. 🍂☀️

As autumn arrives, it’s easy to assume that the weaker sun means your skin is finally safe.

But UV damage doesn’t follow the calendar.

Even on cooler or overcast days, UV exposure can still contribute to:
• Photoaging
• Sun damage
• Pigmentation and other skin changes
• Long-term damage that may only become visible years later

And because autumn doesn’t feel hot, it’s easy to forget that UV exposure is still happening.

The answer? Consistent sun protection all year round.

If you’ve noticed changes to your skin over the past few months, or you’re unsure whether your current skincare routine is doing enough, autumn is a good time to review your skin.

A routine skin check can help assess any changes and give you a clearer plan for the months ahead.

Your skin doesn’t take a break from UV just because summer is over.

As summer fades, your skin might be feeling the effects of months of sun, heat and humidity. September is the perfect moment to reset your skin barrier and undo some of that seasonal stress.

A compromised barrier leaves skin more reactive, dehydrated and prone to sensitivity. The good news: it's entirely reversible. With the right routine and professional guidance, you can rebuild resilience and prepare your skin for the cooler months ahead. We often see patients in early autumn who've noticed their skin feels tight, irritated or reactive after summer.

A consultation helps us assess what your barrier needs most, whether that's specific ingredients, adjustments to your routine, or targeted treatments to restore function. Think of September as your skin's reset button. Let's work together to get it back to its best.

The solar eclipse may be something you want to watch, but your eyes cannot tell you when they’re being damaged.

Looking directly at the Sun, even during a partial eclipse, can expose the retina to intense light and cause solar retinopathy. There may be no pain or immediate warning, and any resulting visual changes can be long-lasting.

If you're watching tonight, use certified solar viewing glasses or an approved solar viewer. Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient.

Enjoy the eclipse: just don't look directly at it without proper protection.

☀️ Summer holiday coming up? Your skin deserves the same attention as your suitcase. ✈️🧴

Here's a simple 3-week skin prep checklist before you travel:

📅 Week 1: Book a skin consultation
Got a mole you're worried about? A breakout that won't clear? Uneven skin tone or another concern?

Now is the perfect time to get it checked. If treatment is needed, your skin has time to recover before your holiday.

🧴 Week 2: Keep your routine simple
If your dermatologist recommends a new product or treatment, introduce it now so your skin has time to adjust.

And don't forget... SPF every day ☀️🧴

💧 Week 3: Stay consistent
Stick with what's working.
✅ Stay hydrated.
✅ Keep using your routine.
🚫 Avoid trying new skincare just before you travel.

A quick skin check before your holiday can give you peace of mind, so you can relax and enjoy your trip knowing your skin is looked after.

🌴 Safe travels and enjoy the sunshine!

Many people stop using retinol when summer arrives because they're worried it isn't safe in the sun. In reality, many people can continue using retinol throughout the warmer months with the right routine.

☀️ Apply retinol at night.
💧 Follow with a moisturiser.
🧴 Wear SPF 30+ every morning and reapply regularly if you're outdoors.
🌿 If you're new to retinol, consider starting with a lower strength or using it just a few nights a week before gradually increasing.

Retinol can help improve skin texture, support collagen production and even skin tone over time, but it's important to use it correctly and protect your skin from UV exposure.

Everyone's skin is different. If you're unsure whether retinol is suitable for you, have sensitive skin, or need advice on building the right skincare routine, seek professional medical advice.

Mr Hassan Aziz Mirza and Dr Andreea Anton can assess your skin and provide personalised guidance on whether retinol is appropriate for you and how to use it safely throughout summer and beyond.

Why do people wait years before getting a mole checked?

It's rarely because they're too busy.

More often, it's because they tell themselves:

• "It's always looked like that."
• "It doesn't hurt, so it must be fine."
• "I'm probably overreacting."
• "I'll keep an eye on it for now."

The problem is that skin changes can happen gradually. When you see something every day, it's easy to miss subtle differences over time.

Many patients tell us they noticed a mole months or even years ago, but only booked an appointment when a friend, partner, or family member pointed it out.

Most of the time, an assessment provides reassurance.

But when a mole has changed in size, shape, colour, or behaviour, getting it checked sooner rather than later is always the better option.

If something about a mole doesn't seem quite right, trust your instincts and have it assessed by a qualified professional.

A few minutes of reassurance can provide peace of mind for years.

The UK is seeing unusually hot conditions this week, with parts of England reaching record May temperatures and heat-health alerts issued across several regions. Hot weather can increase dehydration, trigger flare-ups of sensitive skin, worsen rosacea and eczema, and raise the risk of sun damage.

During a heatwave, keep skin care simple: apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily (and reapply), stay hydrated, choose lightweight non-comedogenic products, avoid prolonged midday sun exposure, and soothe overheated skin with gentle moisturisers and cool compresses. If irritation, persistent redness, or unusual skin changes develop, seek dermatology advice.

Stress doesn’t just affect how you feel. It can affect your skin too.

During stressful periods, many people notice:
• breakouts
• redness or sensitivity
• eczema or psoriasis flare-ups
• dull, tired-looking skin
• increased hair shedding

This happens because stress can increase inflammation, affect sleep, and weaken your skin barrier.

The good news is that small changes can help:
✓ keep skincare simple
✓ prioritise sleep
✓ stay hydrated
✓ manage stress levels where possible
✓ wear SPF daily

If your skin has suddenly changed or a condition is flaring up, it may be worth getting professional advice.
