Still here after 46 years – but for how long?

We receive no funding from the NHS or the government – no safety net, no guaranteed income, nothing to fall back on if things get hard. What we do have is a small, dedicated team of headache specialists doing focused, high impact work for the one in seven adults and one in ten children affected by migraine and other primary headaches.

This summer, help us keep that lifeline open.

🌑️ With a rare red weather warning now in place across parts of England and Wales this week, we want to check in with our migraine community.

Extreme heat can be a migraine trigger β€” and with temperatures forecast to reach highs of 38Β°C in some parts of the country, it's more important than ever to take care of yourself.

Our top tips:

πŸ’§ Stay hydrated

πŸ•ΆοΈ Wear your sunglasses β€” bright light and heat is a tough combination

🏠 Stay out of direct sun between 11am–3pm if you can

❄️ Keep your space as cool as possible, especially overnight

We'd love to hear from you β€” what helps you manage during a heatwave? Drop your tips in the comments πŸ‘‡

Congratulations to our senior headache specialist, Dr Katy Munro, who was honoured with OUCH (UK) - Cluster Headaches' prestigious Les Charlton Award at its 2026 summer conference in Birmingham yesterday.

The award recognises exceptional dedication to improving the lives of people affected by cluster headache and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs), and was presented by Professor Peter Goadsby, chairman of OUCH (UK), alongside comedian, actor, writer, director and cluster headache advocate Chris Addison.

During the conference, Dr Munro spoke about the vital work OUCH (UK) does to ensure people living with cluster headache are listened to, supported and treated effectively. She also highlighted the importance of seeking advice from headache specialists and the range of support available through the National Migraine Centre, including specialist consultations, free educational resources and our Heads Up podcast.

Cluster headache is often described as one of the most painful conditions known to medicine, yet many people still struggle to receive a timely diagnosis and access the right treatment. Events like this help raise awareness, share expertise and ensure patients' voices are heard.

The National Migraine Centre welcomes the news that atogepant has been recommended for use as an acute, rescue treatment for migraine.

Migraine affects 14 per cent of the UK population and, at its worst, can be a severely disabling condition, affecting relationships, employment and mental health.

Today’s news will give hope to millions and is yet another breakthrough that, along with other anti-CGRP medications, is revolutionising the treatment of headache.

Dr Katy Munro, senior GP headache specialist at the National Migraine Centre, said:

β€˜Migraine is a highly debilitating, genetic, neurological condition which impacts the lives of people who suffer these disabling attacks and also affects their family, friends and colleagues.

There have been some great developments in how we can help people with migraine over the last few years, and my team at the National Migraine Centre and I welcome the NICE recommendation about the use of atogepant for acute, rescue treatment for migraine attacks.

Individuals vary greatly in their response to medications to treat migraine attacks and it is so helpful to have a wider range of options to explore with them now.

We at the National Migraine Centre always encourage patients to seek information about migraine treatments by looking at our website and our factsheets, listening to our Heads Up podcast or referring themselves to see one of our specialist doctors.

I am hopeful that many primary care providers, including pharmacists, will be able to help more people with migraine and that migraine funding, understanding and training is seen as a priority going forward.’
