October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with roughly 1 in 7 women developing it during their lifetime. While vastly more common in women, men can also be diagnosed.

Women:

Around 55,000 to 59,000 new cases are diagnosed every year (averaging about 160 cases every day).

Men:

Approximately 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year.

Survival Rates

Survival rates in the UK have improved dramatically over the decades due to advances in screening and treatment, with roughly 1 in 20 people dying from the disease today compared to 1 in 7 in the 1990s.

5-Year Survival:

Approximately 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer survive their disease for 5 years or more.

10-Year Survival: More than 75% (roughly 76.6%) of women survive for 10 years or more after diagnosis.

Early Detection Impact:

Survival rates are heavily tied to how early the cancer is caught. When diagnosed at the earliest stages (Stage 1 or 2), the vast majority of women respond very well to treatment, whereas advanced or metastatic stages (Stage 4) have lower long-term survival figures.

If you or someone you know is affected by breast cancer, you can reach out to UK support services like Breast Cancer Now (free helpline: 0808 800 6000) for information, guidance, and emotional support.

Today is World Alzheimer’s Day

Globally, someone develops dementia (of which Alzheimer's is the most common form, accounting for 60–70% of cases) approximately every 3 seconds.

Broken down to an hourly rate:

With roughly 10 million new cases globally each year, that averages out to about 1,140 new cases every hour worldwide (or roughly 19 every minute).

Knowing the early signs can help with early treatment to slow down the symptoms.

URGENT ACTION IS NEEDED.
As we await a response from the new Health Minister regarding delegated nursing tasks for people receiving Direct Payments, we sincerely hope this issue will finally be treated with the urgency it deserves.
Families should not have to continue waiting indefinitely for legislation that could provide clarity, protection and a workable framework for essential care to be delivered safely in people’s own homes.
This is not simply about policy or paperwork — this is about people’s lives, dignity, safety and the ability of families to provide the care their loved ones need.
The current uncertainty places an enormous burden on families and those employed through Direct Payments. We need clear legislation, clear guidance and meaningful action — not further delays.
We are calling on the new Health Minister to listen to families, recognise the urgency and act now to put the necessary legislation in place.
People and families cannot afford to wait any longer.

Corneal Arcus is a gray, white, or blue ring or crescent that forms around the outer edge of the cornea. It’s caused by a buildup of lipids (fats and cholesterol) in the outer layers of the corneal tissue. It does not cause pain or block your central vision but can indicate high cholesterol levels particularly if under 50. If you have this ring along your eye, a quick blood test to check your cholesterol levels would be advisable.
