We have published the findings of our themed review into the provision of weight management services by pharmacies.

As demand for these services continues to grow, the review highlights the importance of ensuring that appropriate safeguards and governance arrangements are consistently in place to protect patient safety.

The review sets out clear expectations for pharmacy owners and superintendent pharmacists, including:

• Ensuring prescribing decisions are based on robust and appropriate clinical assessments
• Verifying key patient information, rather than relying solely on self-reported data
• Maintaining effective two-way communication between the prescriber and the person receiving care
• Strengthening governance frameworks, including audit, risk management, and accountability processes

These measures are particularly important in the context of remote and online service delivery, where additional risks may arise.

Pharmacies providing weight management services must ensure that care is person-centred, clinically appropriate, and delivered in line with our standards for registered pharmacies.

We will continue to engage with the sector to support improvement and will take action where necessary to ensure patient safety is not compromised.

A reminder for pharmacy owners and superintendent pharmacists:

When a pharmacy changes ownership, the new owner must notify the GPhC within 28 days. The form must be submitted after completion, signed by both previous and new owners, and the fee paid.

Missing the deadline means the pharmacy will be removed from the register, requiring closure and restoration.

If the new owner organisation doesn’t already own pharmacies, a superintendent pharmacist must also be nominated.

We are making important changes to how pharmacies manage their registration with us.

From June 2026, all pharmacy premises renewal activities will move from myGPhCpharmacy into myGPhC, bringing registration services together in a single, secure system.

As part of this change:

• myGPhCpharmacy will be retired from 18 June 2026
• All renewals, payments and delegate user management will take place in myGPhC
• MyGPhC will be temporarily unavailable between 18 and 24 June while we make this transition
• We will stop sending renewal notices by post, and instead send them by email to users linked to the pharmacy owner

This change is designed to strengthen security, improve functionality and provide new features, including automated renewal reminders.

We’re consulting on our proposals for a new, streamlined one‑year registration route for internationally‑qualified pharmacists trained outside the European Economic Area, EFTA countries and Switzerland.

The proposals would replace the current two‑year route with an integrated programme combining academic learning and learning in practice, focused on pharmacy practice in Great Britain. They include independent prescribing from initial registration, recognition of relevant prior learning and experience, and continued assessment through the Common Registration Assessment.

The proposed approach reflects that applicants are already qualified pharmacists, reduces unnecessary duplication, and lowers time and cost barriers, while maintaining standards and public protection.

By enabling internationally-qualified pharmacists to enter the workforce sooner and prescribe from day one, we aim to support a sustainable pharmacy workforce and improve patient care.
Deadline for responses is 21 July 2026.

We look forward to hearing your views as part of the consultation.
