Is facial beauty subjective, or is there actual structure behind it?

In this video, I break down why it's both. Yes, beauty varies enormously across cultures and ethnicities — but it also follows identifiable patterns: the proportions of facial thirds (first studied by Leonardo da Vinci), the relationship between the nose, eyes and lips, and how these elements balance one another.

Interestingly, the most attractive faces aren't always the most symmetrical or mathematically "perfect" ones — they're the ones where proportions sit in harmony, often blending features from different backgrounds rather than following one rigid ideal.

This is also why precision matters so much in facial surgery. The human eye can detect a difference of just half a millimetre between one eye and the other. It's a discipline measured in millimetres, not centimetres.

In a feed full of AI-generated "perfect" faces, we've been thinking a lot about what that word "perfect" actually costs people...

Julian was recently interviewed for The Guardian's piece on the rise of "AI face": patients arriving at consultations with an AI-generated image of their 'ideal look', generated in seconds, often built from generic beauty templates rather than their own bone structure.

It's part of a wider pattern researchers have been tracking for a few years now, often called digital or "Snapchat" dysmorphia... the gap between a filtered or AI-edited self-image and what's actually achievable, safely, in real tissue.

It's also why we've rebuilt our before & after gallery around one rule: absolutely nothing is retouched or AI-enhanced. What you see is what surgery actually achieved - documented, real, unfiltered.

We think that distinction is only going to matter more, not less.
