A major milestone for medical cannabis in Europe.

Exilby®, a cannabis-derived medicine developed for chronic lower back pain with a neuropathic component, has received market authorisation in Germany and Austria, with UK approval expected later this year.

Following over a decade of development and Phase 3 clinical trials involving more than 1,200 patients, this marks the first European approval of its kind for this indication.

Whether this changes the future of pain management remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the conversation around medical cannabis is increasingly being driven by evidence.

New research published in 2026 explored how medical cannabis influenced sleep in adults diagnosed with insomnia. Using EEG monitoring, researchers observed that participants experienced calmer brain activity as they fell asleep, without measurable next day impairment in alertness or reaction time.
