After taking a short break, one thing always stands out to me.
It’s only when life slows down that we begin to notice ourselves.

When we’re constantly busy, it’s easy to move from one responsibility to the next without much thought. Work, family, emails, commitments… they keep us occupied, but they can also keep us disconnected from what we’re actually feeling.

Often, it isn’t until there’s a little more space that we notice the anxiety we’ve been carrying, the strain in a relationship, or the sense that something hasn’t felt quite right for some time.

This is one of the reasons therapy can be so valuable.
Not because it offers quick answers, but because it creates space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences with curiosity rather than judgement. Through that process, a deeper understanding of yourself can begin to emerge, making lasting change possible.

I’m back in practice this week and looking forward to working with both new and existing clients.

Are you a chameleon?

One of the things I often notice in therapy is how good people are at adapting at playing roles.
“I’m a dad.”
“I’m a dog owner.”
“I’m a partner.”
“I’m a therapist.”

We instinctively know which version of ourselves is needed. We become the calm one, the dependable one, the joker, the leader, the listener, or the one who always has it together.

Being adaptable isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In many ways, it’s helped us navigate life, relationships, and work. It’s often how we’ve learnt to connect with others and meet the demands placed upon us.

But sometimes, after years of adapting, we can lose sight of a simple question:

“Who am I when I’m not being who everyone else needs me to be?”

In therapy, people don’t always come because they’re falling apart. Quite often, they come because they’re tired. Tired of performing. Tired of carrying responsibility. Tired of feeling disconnected from themselves without really knowing why.

Therapy isn’t about becoming someone different. Sometimes it’s simply about creating enough space to discover which parts of yourself have been quietly waiting to be heard.

If you’ve spent a long time adapting to everyone and everything around you, perhaps it’s worth asking yourself whether you’ve adapted so well that you’ve forgotten what feels most like you.

“We’re arguing about the dishes.”

Probably not.

In couples therapy, it’s rare that people are only arguing about the dishes, the washing, whose turn it is to put the bins out, or who’s collecting the children.

These are often the conversations we hear.

Underneath them, we sometimes find something else.

“I don’t feel appreciated.”

“I feel like I’m carrying this on my own.”

“I don’t think you see how hard I’m trying.”

“I miss feeling close to you.”

The argument may be about the dishes.

The feeling is often about something much deeper.

One of the aims of couples therapy isn’t simply to stop arguments. It’s to understand what those arguments are trying to communicate when words have become difficult to find.

Often, when couples begin to hear the feeling beneath the conflict, the conversation starts to change.

If your relationship feels stuck in the same conversations, therapy can provide a space to understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

“I’m fine.”

It’s a phrase I hear often. Sometimes it means exactly that.

Other times it can mean:

“I don’t want to worry anyone.”

“I haven’t really thought about it.”

“I’ve got too much to do to stop and feel it.”

“I don’t know how to explain it.”

The people who say they’re fine are often the ones carrying a lot.

They are looking after family, running businesses, managing teams, supporting partners, or simply trying to keep everything moving.

Over time, constantly focusing on everyone else’s needs can make it difficult to notice your own, not because they aren’t there but because there hasn’t been the space.

Therapy isn’t always about crisis. Sometimes it’s about having somewhere to stop, think, and ask yourself:

“How am I, really?”

And perhaps more importantly:

“What do I need?”

If you’ve been carrying a lot for a long time and haven’t had much space for yourself, feel free to get in touch.

How much is what you’re feeling affecting you?

In therapy, we often try to understand not just what someone is feeling, but how much it is affecting them.

Many therapists use a simple scale of 1–10. Others find different ways of measuring intensity that feel more meaningful to them. Today, as I looked up at the blue sky and felt the breeze, I was reminded of the Beaufort Wind Scale. It measures wind strength from 0 (calm) to 12 (hurricane force).
It made me wonder whether this could be a useful way to think about our emotional experiences.

The next time you’re feeling anxious, angry, sad, or overwhelmed, ask yourself:
“What am I experiencing right now?”
And then:
“Is this a 3 – a gentle breeze?”
“A 7 – a high wind that is making things difficult?”
“Or a 10 – a storm that is affecting almost everything?”
Putting a measure to our experience doesn’t make it disappear, but it can help us understand it, communicate it, and notice when things are changing.

Sometimes the first step towards change is finding the right language for what we’re living through.

If you’re finding yourself weathering a storm and would like a space to explore what you’re experiencing, I’d be happy to talk. Feel free to contact me for an informal conversation about how therapy might help.

Should I take that promotion?

It’s something you’ve worked towards. A role you once imagined would feel like a natural next step in your career. Yet when the opportunity arrives, a different question emerges: Is this really true to who I am?

What looked like a straightforward career decision becomes something more complex. Part of you feels excited by the challenge and possibility. Another part wonders whether accepting means taking on too much, sacrificing balance, or moving further away from what matters.

Scary if you take it. Scary if you don’t.
Sometimes the dilemma isn’t about the role itself, but about what is driving the decision. Are you saying no because it genuinely isn’t right for you, or because staying where you are feels safer? Are you saying yes because it aligns with your values and ambitions, or because you feel compelled to keep achieving, proving, and pushing forward?

In therapy, these moments can reveal the tensions we carry between security and growth, authenticity and expectation, ambition and contentment.
The question is often not “What should I do?”
It’s “Who am I being when I make this decision?”

Therapy can be one of the few places where you are truly listened to.

A space where someone hears your story and stays present with it.

Where your words are not interrupted, challenged, competed with, or dismissed.

A space where someone listens carefully, helps you explore what you’ve said, asks thoughtful questions, and becomes curious about what may sit beneath the surface.

Together, we can bring focus and clarity to the underlying issues, understand the patterns that shape your life, and explore the values and beliefs that matter most to you.

Therapy is not about proving a point, winning an argument, or protecting someone else’s agenda.

It’s about creating a relationship where your dignity is respected, your experiences are taken seriously, and you can begin to understand yourself more deeply.

Sometimes, being genuinely heard is where change begins.

Therapy doesn’t follow a fixed route.
The journey unfolds differently for each person.

Some arrive with a clear destination in mind. Others begin with a feeling that something no longer fits, even if they can’t yet name it.

What matters is that the pace is led by you.

A good therapeutic relationship creates enough safety for difficult thoughts, emotions, and patterns to emerge when you are ready, not when you are pushed. Some sessions may focus on a specific issue, while others begin to uncover deeper themes around relationships, identity, burnout, or emotional survival.

Therapy can be:

* Short-term and focused around a particular challenge
* Open-ended, allowing space for deeper self-understanding
* Something you return to during periods of transition, stress, or change
* Part of ongoing psychological maintenance and reflection

There is rarely a final destination in therapy.
More often, the work is about developing a different relationship with yourself, your emotions, and the way you move through the world.

Sometimes that means getting through a crisis.
Sometimes it means understanding why the same patterns keep repeating.
Sometimes it simply means having a space where you no longer have to hold everything alone.

If you’re considering therapy and wondering what the process might look like, feel free to get in touch.

Relationships Under Pressure

Relationships can feel like they’re on autopilot, small conflicts, distance, or misunderstandings slowly build up.

Therapy can help you and your partner slow down, notice recurring patterns, and communicate more effectively. Even subtle shifts can create deeper connection and understanding.

Do you notice recurring patterns in your relationships? How do you usually respond?

Burnout & Disconnection

Burnout doesn’t just affect work, it can quietly pull you away from yourself and your relationships.

Emotional exhaustion, perfectionism, or constant pressure often leave people feeling disconnected from purpose, relationships, or even your own inner life.

Therapy can help reconnect you to yourself, noticing patterns, reclaiming energy, and restoring clarity.

Have you noticed this in your own life recently?
