Treatment included:

Throughout treatment, the patient continued to make steady progress despite recovery from hip surgery and periods of travel. By the latest review, most nails were growing out clear and healthy, with only the right fifth toenail requiring ongoing management.

There's more to callus removal than the satisfying transformation. 👣
This patient has an underlying condition that causes the skin to produce callus much more rapidly than normal, resulting in recurrent thick, hardened skin despite regular care.

Calluses develop in response to repeated pressure and friction. While they protect the skin, excessive build-up can become painful, affect walking, and increase the risk of skin breakdown. Clinical callus reduction helps relieve discomfort while allowing the underlying cause to be monitored and managed.

Not all ingrown toenails are visible from the surface.
In this case, assessment revealed a significantly curved nail with a large hidden nail spike extending beneath the skin. Before treatment, the nail was carefully examined and marked to determine the appropriate amount to remove while preserving as much healthy nail as possible.

The ingrown section was then precisely removed using specialist podiatry instruments to relieve pressure and reduce irritation.

New school shoes should fit comfortably and provide enough room for growing feet. Children’s feet can change quickly, so it’s important to check their school shoes, socks and overall foot comfort regularly.

Look out for:
👟 Shoes that are too tight or narrow

A deep fungal nail infection can affect far more than the surface of the nail.
As the infection progresses, it can damage both the nail plate and the underlying nail bed, causing thickening, discolouration, nail separation (onycholysis), and permanent nail deformity in some cases.

In this reel, the affected nail is carefully reduced and the separated areas are thoroughly cleaned to remove debris and reduce the risk of further fungal or bacterial infection. Due to the extent of the damage, a small amount of bleeding may occur during deep debridement.

This patient presented with a confirmed fungal nail infection affecting multiple toenails, alongside nail trauma related to regular running. Treatment included topical antifungal therapy, oral medication prescribed by their GP, routine podiatry care, and regular nail debridement.

Following ongoing treatment and monitoring, a repeat fungal nail test was negative, and the patient was discharged with healthy-looking nails and advice to continue preventative care.

Not all damaged toenails are simply fungal infections or trauma. Persistent nail thickening, discolouration, pain, or nail dystrophy may indicate an underlying condition that requires further investigation.

In this case, the damaged toenail was carefully removed following clinical assessment. The yellow staining seen at the beginning is povidone-iodine, an antiseptic used to prepare the area before the procedure. A soft tissue sample was then taken from the nail matrix for laboratory analysis to help establish a diagnosis and guide treatment.
