โ Your morning coffee might be doing your heart a favor.
A brand-new Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association (Circulation, 2026) just settled decades of debate and the findings may surprise you:
๐ด Arrhythmias (AF): Moderate coffee intake is NOT linked to higher risk. In fact, RCTs show a 39% reduction in AF recurrence with daily coffee.
๐ข Coronary Artery Disease: Up to 6 cups/day shows no increased risk, light-moderate intake is linked to ~10% lower risk.
๐ก Heart Failure: A J-shaped curve, lowest risk at ~4 cups/day. Both too little and too much shift the risk upward.
๐ข Stroke: A U-shaped curve, lowest risk at 3โ4 cups/day, with a 21% risk reduction at the sweet spot.
๐ก๏ธ The bottom line: Up to 400 mg caffeine/day (~3โ5 cups) is considered safe for most adults and may even be cardioprotective.
โ ๏ธ One critical caveat: these findings apply to moderate coffee/tea intake not energy drinks or high-dose caffeine supplements, which carry a very different risk profile.
For clinicians, patients, and coffee lovers alike this is essential reading.
