🪴P L A N T S A L E 🪴
Our next open afternoon at the garden will be our annual May Plant Sale on Saturday 30th May. Come and see the garden in its late spring glory and pick up some plants for your own garden. We’ll have a range of herbs, flowers and edible plants.

All plants are grown from seeds or cuttings from our existing plants and potted in peat-free compost in either plastic-free or reused pots. We’ll also have some plastic-free pots available to purchase too.

We will share a full list next week on the event page but here is some of what we will have:

🌿 lemon balm, mints, valerian, marshmallow, blackcurrant sage, scented geraniums, sweet woodruff, mugwort, motherwort, ivy, calendula, aloe vera 🌼

🫖 We will have a selection of lovely herbal teas and cake for sale.
☕️ Please bring a cup or mug to help us avoid disposable cups.
🛍️ If you are intending to buy plants please bring bags to take them home in.
🪴If you’ve got small plastic plant pots you don’t need you can bring them to us and we can re-use them

See you there! 🌞

Making Herbal Vinegars 🌿 Last week we had a lovely time in the garden celebrating and making spring tonics with our Nature Club. Infusing fresh herbs is a lovely way to preserve them at their seasonal best. We used a mixture of different herbs including cleavers, nettle, calendula, mint, rosemary, 3-cornered leek and bay.
🌿
To make an infused vinegar all you need to do is fill a clean glass jar roughly half full with any mix of fresh edible herbs and then cover with vinegar. We like apple cider vinegar for all the added health benefits. Leave your herbs to infuse for about 2-3 weeks shaking every few days and then strain out the herbs. You can use the vinegar in cooking or dilute a few spoonfuls in hot water with lemon and honey.
Can’t west to strain out these ones in a few weeks!

Herb Walks are back! 👟🌳
Wilder green spaces are abundant with springtime weeds at this time of year and most of these are both edible and medicinal! Spring is such an exciting time as we welcome back some of our favourite herbs who have distinct points in the season when they can be seen. To learn more about wild plants we would love you to join us on our April Herb Walk 🌿

Nature is a twig and some other thoughts on winter. Re-hashed from a post a few years back!

A gentle reminder that right now nature isn’t trying to do its best, it’s not trying to set big plans for the year ahead or even thinking about how and when it’s going to bloom this year. It isn’t thinking much about the future, it isn’t setting intentions, it’s resting, saving it’s energy and definitely not trying to do all the things.

Trees are brown, twiggy, skeletal, still beautiful of course but not making any effort to put on a show. Much or our natural world is literally hanging out, dormant, seemingly lifeless.

Don’t get me wrong, the signs of early spring are upon us and some of us might be feeling the call for an early spring clean, making way for fresh ideas. But it’s equally fine if you are feeling called to lean into rest and do the bare minimum required (highly recommended if possible).

Despite capitalism’s best attempts to make us think otherwise, working endlessly, being fully productive day after day, all year round is not something that we can sustain. We are also living through times when our nervous systems are most overwhelmed and burnt out. Our energies wax and wane in relation to the seasons and each of us as individuals have ‘our time’ when we find it easier to be present and engaged.

So if your season isn’t wet and soggy winter just remember those brown, twiggy, ‘dead like’ plants and that it’s ok to hang out, rest, say no until you feel ready for your own next season.

sending love 🤎

Wow, what a year! Our hearts are full as we reflect on another packed year at Hackney Herbal. This one was extra special as we celebrated our 10th Birthday. As we approach the incoming solstice and the end of the year we are once again so grateful for all of you who are part of our community. You make Hackney Herbal what it is and without you and we are so thankful for this.

Hackney Herbal was established with the core aim of making nature-based activities accessible and freely available to people in our local community. Here is a snapshot of our social impact in numbers and some photo highlights from 2025.

Thank you to all of you who support and enrich our work by coming to workshops and events, buying our tea, volunteering in the garden and everyone here for simply following along. It’s been a pleasure to work with so many people who share our passions for the natural world and all the incredible creatures it sustains.

Thank you also to all our collaborators, clients, stockists, funders and partners without which we would not be able to deliver this valuable work. Sending love to you all! 💚
