UCLH has opened a new trial for people with ulcerative colitis and recruited the first participant globally.

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease where inflammation of the colon causes symptoms like bleeding and diarrhoea. UC has become more common in the UK over the last 25 years and now affects about 0.5% people.

The study is being led at UCLH by Dr Paul Harrow, consultant gastroenterologist. Dr Harrow said: “We are excited to be able to participate in this study which we hope will lead to a new treatment pathway for patients with UC.

"I appreciate the time and efforts of the participants and the whole study team who made this possible.”

To mark (which took place on 1 August), we are spotlighting robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, which has already diagnosed over 500 patients at UCLH. It is an innovative, minimally invasive procedure helping clinicians diagnose lung earlier and more accurately.

The cutting-edge technology, which is available in only nine units in England, enables specialists to navigate deep into the lungs to test small nodules and lesions often beyond the reach of standard techniques. Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy at UCLH was established in 2024 supported by funding from North Central London Cancer Alliance.

Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy enables investigating much sooner, helping diagnose cancer at an earlier stage when treatment is more likely to be successful.

Dr Ricky Thakrar, consultant in respiratory medicine at UCLH, said: “The Lung Cancer Screening programme is picking up nodules in very large numbers, with almost 200,000 people across the UK now under surveillance. Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy is what allows us to act on what screening finds, safely and far earlier than we could before.”

The largest clinical trial of long Covid care to date has found that specialist long Covid services may help reduce fatigue, one of the condition’s most common and disabling symptoms.

The findings, published in Nature Medicine and led by researchers and clinicians from UCL and UCLH, come from the STIMULATE-ICP trial, which was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre.

The study involved more than 1,100 people receiving care through six NHS long clinics in England, making it the largest trial to evaluate different approaches to delivering long care.

Researchers found that patients' fatigue improved during the first 12 weeks of specialist multidisciplinary care, regardless of whether they also received a specialist multi-organ MRI scan or a digital rehabilitation programme.

Long Covid continues to affect millions of people and can have a profound impact on every aspect of daily life. For some patients, the condition can persist for years after the initial infection, affecting multiple organs and making it difficult to work, care for family or carry out everyday activities.

One of those patients is Dr Anjali Chakraborty, a GP and mother of two, who developed long Covid after contracting Covid-19 in 2020. Five years later, she is still living with the condition, but credits the support of the UCLH long Covid service with helping her regain parts of her life and return to work.

To mark World Head and Neck Cancer Day today, we are raising awareness of a diagnostic technique being offered to patients with early-stage mouth cancer that can spare them major neck surgery.

Sentinel node biopsy (SNB) is a minor surgical procedure that identifies and removes the first lymph node, or small group of nodes, that a tumour drains into. Examining this "sentinel" node shows whether cancer cells have spread, without the need to remove a wider area of lymph nodes in the neck.

UCLH's head and neck team has been offering the technique to suitable patients, helping many avoid more extensive surgery.

UCLH consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon and UCL Professor Clare Schilling (pictured) said: “For many people, this technique means we can find out whether the has spread without putting them through a much bigger operation and a longer recovery.

"World Head and Neck Cancer Day is a good moment to talk about progress like this – it's exactly the kind of advance we want more patients, and more clinicians, to know about."

A new treatment for early Alzheimer’s disease has shown encouraging results with UCLH consultant, Prof Cath Mummery, reporting both slower cognitive decline and significant reductions in the tau protein in the brains of participants.

The phase 2 Biogen sponsored clinical trial announced the findings for the experimental drug diranersen at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) 2026 and now plans to move the drug diranersen into Phase 3 testing.

Prof Cath Mummery, Consultant Neurologist at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The CELIA data provide some of the clearest evidence that reducing tau pathology can translate into clinically meaningful benefit. The magnitude of tau reduction and cognitive benefit observed in CELIA is among the most compelling reported to date in Alzheimer’s disease drug development and supports advancing diranersen to Phase 3 development.”

UCLH has become one of the first centres in the UK to offer Transoral Robotic Thyroidectomy Vestibular Approach (TORTVA), an advanced form of thyroid surgery that avoids a visible scar on the neck.

UCLH head and neck surgeons Jonathan Hughes and Paul Stimpson have now successfully performed the procedure on six patients, including Anna Nebbiati, 41, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year.

Anna had her first operation in April to remove half her thyroid. A week later, histology showed she needed all her thyroid tissue removed, so three weeks on she had a second, identical procedure to remove the rest. She is now on thyroid hormone replacement and due to start radioiodine.

TORTVA is a minimally invasive technique that allows surgeons to remove part or all of the thyroid gland through small incisions inside the lower lip. Because there is no incision on the neck, patients avoid a visible scar.

UCLH has become one of the first centres in the UK to introduce sentinel node biopsy (SNB) as a routine staging procedure for selected patients with early salivary gland cancer.

The innovative technique offers a less invasive way of determining whether cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes and could help many patients avoid unnecessary major surgery.

UCLH consultant head and neck surgeon Clare Schilling said: “Traditionally, many patients with early salivary gland cancer undergo an elective neck dissection to remove lymph nodes, despite only a minority having evidence of cancer spread.

"We estimate that the introduction of sentinel node biopsy could enable up to 80 per cent of suitable patients to avoid unnecessary major surgery and its associated side effects.”
