We need to wake up and smell the coffee
While the government wants to stretch our working lives, our lives spent healthy is decreasing in the UK! The second worst out of 21 developed countries measured
There are solutions.
Things that you can do yourself
Know your numbers: blood pressure, waist circumference, HbA1c, fasting glucose, cholesterol, ApoB, Lp(a), liver markers, vitamin D and inflammatory markers.
Build muscle — because muscle is one of the most powerful metabolic organs in the body.
Improve cardiorespiratory fitness — even brisk walking matters.
Prioritise protein, plants, fibre and healthy fats.
Reduce ultra-processed foods, refined carbohydrates and excess alcohol.
And protect sleep — because sleep is not a luxury, it is metabolic medicine.
This report is a watershed moment.
The UK is not just getting older.
It is becoming metabolically sicker, earlier.
We cannot solve that only with more hospitals and more downstream treatment.
We have to move the front door of medicine earlier — into prevention, early screening, metabolic health, fitness, sleep, stress, and the environments that shape people’s daily choices.
The good news is that much of this is modifiable.
But we have to act before dysfunction becomes disease.”
