Runners: it's almost never your calf.

Calf tightness that keeps coming back is usually a glute problem.

Here's the test: stand on one leg and slowly lower into a quarter squat. If your knee dives inward or your hip drops, your glute medius isn't doing its job — and your lower leg is absorbing the difference. That's why the calf keeps tightening. You're stretching a symptom, not solving the cause.

The fix:

Side-lying leg raises, 15 a side, slow, before you run
Focus on the top glute — the one on the side, not behind you
Do it consistently for two weeks before you judge it
Not sexy. Very effective.

Touch is not a luxury. It's a physiological need, and most adults are running a deficit.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day this Saturday. Some people book me for their shoulders and it turns out it was never about their shoulders.

Here's what the evidence actually supports:

Safe, sustained touch has measurable effects on the nervous system — cortisol drops, heart rate settles, parasympathetic activity rises
The braced feeling — that constant low-level tension most people have accepted as normal — softens in a way that cognitive approaches alone rarely achieve
An emotional wobble afterwards is normal. Not a sign something went wrong. A sign the nervous system just put something down that it had been carrying
Massage is not therapy and shouldn't pretend to be. That line matters — overclaiming undermines trust with the people who need both
What it does well is work alongside whatever else you have in place — addressing what's happening in the body while other support addresses the mind
It's OK to book because you feel awful. You don't have to be fine first
Send this to someone who's been running on empty.

"I always come away feeling healed and relaxed and never in pain."

From a client with long-standing back problems who's been with me through pregnancy and post-natally.

Long-term relationships are the whole point of this job.

I know her history. I know what her back does in winter — when it's grumpier than usual and needs a different approach. I know what she was doing the week before from the way the tissue responds when I start. And I don't start from scratch every time, because we haven't started from scratch in years.

That's something a different therapist every visit can't give you. The continuity is where the value compounds.

The one for people who carry a bag on one shoulder every day.

Here's what to do:

Doorway stretch: forearm flat against the frame, elbow at shoulder height, step through gently and turn away. 30 seconds each side.
Shoulder blade squeeze: down and back, hold five, ten times.
Here's why it matters:

Carrying weight consistently on one side shortens the front of that shoulder and — over time — switches off the muscles that should be holding it back. The shoulder rounds forward. The neck compensates. The whole right or left side of your upper body starts working differently from the other.

Swap sides with the bag while you're at it. Alternate where you can. Your dominant shoulder has been absorbing all of it for years without a break.

Your body has been telling you this for years.

Save it. Do it tonight.

The playlist question.

I've been asked about it more than once — so yes, it's mostly ambient. Yes, there's rain on some of it. And yes, I will absolutely turn it off if you'd rather have silence.

One client asked for Radio 4 mid-session. I had my doubts. It worked perfectly for her. We've never gone back to ambient.

Someone else wants complete silence from the moment I walk in. Another wants whatever I'd normally put on and doesn't want to think about it.

The point is: it's your hour. You don't have to fit into a preset. The music, the conversation, the pressure, the focus — all of it bends around you. The rules are made up.

What would you actually want playing?

Three sessions, then once a month. That's the pattern that works.

People expect me to say come every week forever. I don't.

For an established problem, it's usually this:

Two or three closer-together sessions to change the pattern — shift what the tissue is doing and interrupt the cycle
Then monthly maintenance to hold it
With the stretches I send you home with doing the heavy lifting in between
That's the model. Not because it generates the most bookings, but because it's what actually works.

If someone tells you you need to come weekly indefinitely, ask them what the endpoint is. A good therapist should be able to answer that.

Presenteeism costs UK employers more than absence does.

Written for whoever's building the 2027 wellbeing plan right now. Because Q4 is when that decision gets made.

People at desks in pain are working at a fraction of their output — and nobody flags it because they showed up
Back and neck pain are among the biggest causes of lost working days in the UK — and among the most undertreated areas in workplace wellbeing
Fruit bowls don't touch musculoskeletal pain. Apps don't either. Neither does a resilience webinar
Twenty minutes of on-site chair massage changes the physical state of the person going back to their desk — not their mindset about work, their actual body
Q4 is when 2027 budgets are set. January is when teams need it most. The planning window is now
The staff perks people actually remember are the physical ones.

Your neck hurts because your ribcage stopped moving.

Not what most people expect to hear — but here's why it matters.

Sit tall, hands behind your head, elbows wide. Arch backwards over the back of the chair — just the upper back, not the lower. Five slow ones. Then a side bend, reaching one arm overhead and across, ten breaths each side.

When the upper back and ribs stiffen, the neck takes over the movement they should be doing. And it complains. That's the neck pain most people treat with neck stretches, neck pillows, and neck massages — with results that last a day or two before it's back.

Treat the neck all you like. If the thoracic spine is locked, the neck goes straight back to overworking the moment you stand up.

The fix isn't in the neck. It's in what stopped moving above it.

Comment STRETCH and I'll send you the full upper-back set.

The bit of the job nobody expects: I'm quiet if you want quiet.

Some people want to talk the whole way through — I'm happy to chat. Some want silence from the first minute — I'm equally happy with that. Both are completely fine, and you don't need to manage me.

If you'd rather not chat, say so at the start. It isn't rude. It's useful information.

The number of people who lie there making polite conversation while desperately wanting to switch off is much higher than you'd think. They don't want to seem unfriendly. They don't want to make it awkward. So they talk — for an entire hour about their week — when what they actually needed was to not talk at all.

Your session is yours. You don't have to perform being relaxed. You just have to show up.

"Best price compared to similar local services." And I'll explain why.

I'm mobile. I have no premises, no receptionist, and no waiting room. That overhead doesn't exist in this practice — so it isn't in your price.

What you get instead:

An hour where nobody's knocking to say the next client is waiting
No parking, no journey, no getting back in the car afterwards feeling like jelly
A therapist who comes to you, knows your history, and doesn't start from scratch every time
I'd rather be the therapist people book monthly for years than the one they treat as an annual splurge.

The mobile model isn't a compromise. It's why regular treatment is actually achievable for most people — without it costing what a clinic charges for the same hour.
