Why can anxiety suddenly appear in your 40s — even if you’ve never experienced it before?
It’s easy to assume that new anxiety is simply the result of stress or a busy lifestyle. And while these factors can certainly contribute, there may be more to the picture.
As we move through our 40s, several aspects of health can change at the same time:
1) Hormonal changes — Perimenopause can involve fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone, which may be accompanied by changes in mood, sleep and anxiety.
2) Sleep disruption — Poor or fragmented sleep can affect emotional regulation and make it harder to cope with everyday stress.
3) Stress & nervous system — Long-term psychological or physical stress can influence the way the body responds to challenges.
4) Thyroid & metabolic health — Changes in thyroid function or metabolic health can sometimes produce symptoms that overlap with anxiety, such as fatigue, palpitations or changes in mood.
This doesn’t mean that every new episode of anxiety is caused by hormones. Anxiety can have many possible causes, and new or persistent symptoms deserve an appropriate medical assessment.
We look beyond a single symptom and consider your hormonal health, sleep, lifestyle, medical history and overall health picture when appropriate.
Because sometimes the most useful question isn't:
“How do I stop feeling anxious?”
but:
“What has changed in my body and life that could be contributing to how I feel?”
✨ Understanding the bigger picture is the first step towards personalised care.
