Some medications may impact how the elderly respond to heat, increase risk of dehydration or make skin more sensitive to sunlight.

If you or your loved one take regular medication:
💊 Speak to a GP or pharmacist if you're experiencing any side effects in the heat.
💊 Store medicines away from direct sunlight, in a cool, dry place.
💊 Ensure prescriptions are topped up before periods of very hot weather to avoid unnecessary journeys.

Unfortunately, many UK homes are designed to keep the heat in, rather than out, so indoor temperatures can quickly become uncomfortable, and even hazardous, during heatwaves.

Try these simple home-cooling tips:
🌡️ Close curtains or blinds on sun-facing windows.
🌡️ Turn off unnecessary electrical appliances that generate heat (lamps, dishwashers, television boxes).
🌡️ Use a fan to improve circulation.
🌡️ Consider temporarily setting up a bed in a cooler part of the house, if your bedroom gets particularly hot.

👉 Light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing.
👉 Lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen.
👉 Wide brimmed hats if heading outdoors.
