Ever wondered what an embryo actually needs to grow? 🌱🧬

In an unassisted pregnancy, the first few days of embryo development take place while the embryo travels through the fallopian tube towards the uterus, surrounded by a carefully regulated environment.

During IVF, those same early stages happen outside the body 🔬

That means we need to recreate some of the conditions an embryo would naturally experience: from maintaining a stable temperature and low-oxygen environment to providing the right nutrients, pH and fluid balance through specialised culture media and incubators.

Even things we might not immediately think about, like evaporation, light exposure and how much an embryo is physically handled, can influence its environment.

Of course, even the most carefully controlled conditions can’t guarantee that an embryo will develop. There are many biological factors involved in whether an egg fertilises and an embryo progresses to the blastocyst stage.

But creating a stable, supportive environment gives embryos the conditions they need for those first few days of development. 🤍

Meet our Medical Director 👩‍⚕️

Today we'd like to introduce you to Dr Mireia Galian, our Medical Director here at IVI London.

After completing her undergraduate degree at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (graduating in the 91st percentile of 2012’s MIR promotion), Dr Galian obtained her Medical Residency Programme in Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Hospital Universitari Germans Trias i Pujol in Barcelona. She has also gained an MSc in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) with distinction at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid.

Dr Galian has subsequently gained certification in Genetics and Reproduction for Clinicians and advanced training in ultrasound obstetrics diagnosis.

Dr Galian's clinical expertise combined with her compassionate care have contributed to IVI's excellence success rates, with more than 250,000 babies born since 1990.
