People spend hundreds on eating out, cocktails, bottomless brunches…but what about their wellbeing?

We live in a world where spending £40 on dinner, £12 on a cocktail, or £5 on a coffee is normal. Without hesitation or second thought, we tap the card and we move on.

But when it comes to investing in their health, their nervous system, their energy, their body - suddenly it’s “too expensive”, “maybe next month”, or “I’ll be fine”.

Most of us carry far more stress than we realise. The tight jaw. The heavy chest. The buzzing mind at night. The constant “on edge” feeling. The bracing. The hunched shoulders.

ARE YOU AN OROPHILE?

I learnt a new word today - orophile.

An orophile is a person who loves mountains: someone who feels a strong attraction, affection, or emotional connection to mountainous landscapes.

That is me, to a tee. I have just returned from a glorious week in the Tatra Mountains of Poland.

Delivering FlowEssence's signature 7 step holistic classes out in the mountains was pure bliss: Qi Gong, Yoga, Breathwork, Meditation, Reiki, all in the fresh air, whilst listening to birdsong was a beautiful way to de-stress and regulate the nervous system for greater calm, connection and clarity.

HOW TO BOOST YOUR ENERGY & HEALTH THROUGH DEEP REST

In its first issue of 2026, New Scientist published a feature on The Power of Deep Rest, highlighting how deliberately shifting the body into a state of safety and low physiological demand can improve energy, immunity, cognitive function and overall health.

The article explained that Deep Rest isn’t about sleep or “switching off”. It’s a measurable biological state where:
• heart rate lowers
• breath becomes more efficient
• muscle tension reduces
• the nervous system shifts out of threat mode
• the body prioritises repair, digestion and recovery

Crucially, the research showed that certain practices reliably move the body into this state: gentle movement, stretching, breathwork, meditation, sound, and slow patterned practices like yoga or Qi Gong.

IF SCIENCE CANNOT MEASURE LIFE FORCE ENERGY, IT DOES NOT EXIST.

OR DOES IT?

Following on from my post from yesterday about someone who asked if I am making it all up, you might recall I said this isn’t a woo woo idea, rather, it’s embedded in the world’s oldest medical systems.

Ayurveda calls it Prana, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) calls it Qi (often pronounced chi), and both systems have been used continuously for thousands of years.

And interestingly, modern research is starting to look at these concepts through the lens of physiology, psychoneuroimmunology, and biofield science. For example:

1. Here’s a 2025 peer reviewed scoping review published in the International Journal of Health Sciences and Research that synthesises 122 studies on Prana Vidya, explicitly defined as the regulation of “Prana, the vital life force”, and examines its measurable effects on HRV, vagal tone, cortisol, immune markers, and emotional regulation:

2. Global Advances in Integrative Medicine & Health (2023)
Perception of Subtle Energy “Prana”, and Its Effects During Biofield Practices: A Qualitative Meta Synthesis

This paper explicitly states that prana, qi, ki, and vital force are culturally different names for the same subtle energy concept, and that modern science refers to this as the biofield.

It synthesises 19 studies documenting physical, emotional, and energetic sensations during biofield practices.

4. Biophotons as Subtle Energy Carriers (ResearchGate / Journal of Yoga)
This fascinating paper explores biophotons, which is ultra weak light emitted by living cells, and discusses whether they may be related to qi/prana.

It reviews evidence for biophoton emission changes during meditation and links this to subtle energy theories in Ayurveda and TCM.

None of these papers claim that “life force” is directly measurable - yet. But they do show that:

• ancient systems have always described a regulating life force
• modern research is documenting consistent physiological correlates of practices designed to regulate it
• the scientific term for this cross cultural concept is the human biofield

So, rather than wasting time and pardon the pun, energy, on circling around whether life force energy exists or not, let’s ask a better question:

How do we bridge ancient energetic models with what we can measure today: breath, HRV, vagal tone, neuroimaging, immune markers, and subjective energy experiences that show up across cultures.

This is the space I work in: grounded, open, and evidence aware, without pretending we’ve already mapped the entire human experience with current instruments.

I’ve been having a really interesting back and forth with someone on social media who questioned my use of the term “life force energy.”

Honestly, I understand why. Not everyone has come across the concept, and many people prefer to wait for scientific validation before accepting anything as real. Questioning things is healthy, it’s how we learn, and it’s how science progresses.

So instead of going round in circles, I thought I’d turn the conversation into a post about what science has explored so far. Because while modern instruments can’t directly measure a “life force,” there’s a growing body of research looking at the effects of practices rooted in these ancient ideas.

For example, Ayurveda has described Prana, the vital life force, for thousands of years, and Traditional Chinese Medicine has its own parallel concept, Qi. These aren’t fringe ideas; they’re foundational to two of the world’s oldest medical systems.

And modern research is beginning to study them through the lens of physiology, psychoneuroimmunology, and what’s now called the human biofield.

Which brings me to the bigger question I’d love to hear your thoughts on, so feel free to comment below:

If science hasn’t measured something yet, does that automatically mean it doesn’t exist?

We still can’t measure consciousness scientifically and directly (current research openly acknowledges this), yet few people including scientists would argue it isn’t real.

I’ll be sharing more tomorrow, including a breakdown of the research for anyone who’s curious. These conversations genuinely excite me, as part of my work is helping people understand these concepts so they can experience greater health, vitality, and connection in their own bodies.
