Keeping your practice honest. CPD at Highgate Counselling Centre.

The topics that practitioners return to, such as transference, the therapeutic relationship, what a diagnosis actually means in the room, tend to be the ones that keep the practice honest.

We run CPD workshops across a range of these areas, open to qualified counsellors and trainees at any stage of their career.

What does it mean to support someone in becoming a counsellor?

In this Faces Behind HCC conversation, Jan Harvey-Clarke reflects on more than three decades of supervision: what it asks of us, what it gives, and how the work continues to evolve over time.

From early beginnings at to a long-standing role in supervision, this interview offers a thoughtful perspective on learning, responsibility, and staying open to the process.

Breaks in the therapeutic relationship are rarely just breaks. They carry meaning, stir feelings and can offer some of the richest material in the room.

Our recent article on what therapeutic breaks really bring up, for clients and counsellors alike is live. Read the full article: https://highgatecounselling.org.uk/therapeutic-breaks/

There is no right and wrong in a counselling space. You do not have to be in crisis or even know why you want to start counselling. It could just be curiosity that brings you to the door and that would be an excellent place to start.

At Highgate Counselling Centre we would encourage you to scratch the itch, to push the door a little wider and we will be there to sit beside you and explore together with you what brings you to the work.

Our face-to-face Certificate in Counselling runs Tuesday evenings from September 2026 to July 2027, at our training space in Muswell Hill.

It's a course built around the core skills and foundations of counselling. Whether you're taking your first step towards the profession or want to listen and communicate with more depth in the work you already do, this is a place for you.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Every year Highgate Counselling Centre holds a summer picnic for members and their families. It's an important date in our diaries, where we get to come together as a community and share a little more of what is important to us together.

Graduation Day at HCC! On 18th July, we celebrated our Certificate trainees and qualifying Diploma trainees at HCC's Graduation ceremony.

Michelle Simmons-Safo was an incredibly engaging guest speaker who addressed graduates and guests with thoughtful vigour, energy and passion. This energy was then matched with the whoops of congratulations coming from the graduates and their families, as they watched their peers and loved ones collect their awards.

Such a warm and moving day as the graduates ended their training relationship with the HCC community and were reminded there will always be a place for them in their professional home at HCC.

Moving from one career into another rarely happens all at once. Sometimes it’s a series of interests, questions, and experiences that gradually start to point somewhere else.

As part of our Faces Behind HCC series, a member of the teaching team talks to us about moving from finance into counselling and teaching. How that shift unfolded, and what it has meant to then support others in their own development.
It’s a personal account of training, practice, and the ongoing nature of learning in this work.
