Understanding Neck Tension, Torticollis and Flat Head Syndrome

As a parent, you quickly become familiar with your baby’s movements, preferences and little habits. You may notice that your baby always turns their head to one side, struggles to look in the opposite direction, or seems more comfortable looking one way during feeding, sleeping or tummy time.

While many babies simply develop preferences, consistently favouring one side can sometimes be linked to infant torticollis — a condition where the muscles of the neck become tight or restricted, making it harder for a baby to comfortably move their head through their full range.

Torticollis is one of the most common reasons parents seek advice from a paediatric osteopath, particularly when it is associated with changes in head shape such as flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly).
