An update from EXPERTS-ALS: two of the drugs being tested, metformin and nifedipine, haven't shown an effect on a key blood marker linked to how MND progresses, so the trial team has stopped recruiting new participants onto that part of the study. Three other drugs are still being tested.

An interim result from the EXPERTS-ALS trial shows neither drug lowered a key marker of MND progression, a fast, clear answer that lets researchers focus resources on more promising candidates. EXPERTS-ALS, the UK's platform trial for rapidly screening potential MND treatments, has found that metfor...

New research from the University of Sheffield offers a more precise understanding of apathy in MND, one that could help clinicians and families respond to it more effectively.

Apathy affects between 30% and 70% of people living with MND but often goes unrecognised in clinical care. The study points to practical implications: when apathy reflects the rising cost of everyday activities, support can focus on reducing those barriers rather than making assumptions about a person's willingness or engagement.

The research was supported by people living with MND who took part through TiM-R.

A University of Sheffield study, supported by people who took part through Join MND Research, suggests apathy in motor neuron disease isn't caused by a loss of motivation but forms from everyday tasks becoming too difficult to attempt. Apathy affects an estimated 30% to 70% of people living with MND...

Clinical trials are essential, but even the most promising treatments can take many years to reach the people who need them.

EXPERTS-ALS is a UK-wide research programme designed to identify promising MND treatments faster, using early biological signals rather than waiting years for traditional trial results.

Take a look at the first wave of drugs entering the platform and find out how the approach works.

Six people are diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) in the UK every day. Average survival after diagnosis is around three years, and for a third of people, it is less than one. That urgency is why the speed at which we can identify and test new treatments matters so much. Finding effective trea...
