My Top 5 Skincare Horror Stories (and yes… they still happen

The fastest way to undo your skincare investment and accelerate pigmentation and premature ageing.

More products don’t always mean better skin. Overdoing it can damage your skin barrier and trigger irritation.

Constant tension can lead to traction alopecia, and once it’s advanced, it may be irreversible.

There’s no such thing as a “safe tan.” UV exposure increases skin ageing and skin cancer risk.

Your cuticles protect against bacteria and infection. Trimming them too aggressively can do more harm than good.

Gut tips continue…

30/07/2026

Your gut and skin are constantly communicating through the gut–skin axis. When your gut microbiome is balanced, it helps support your skin barrier, regulate inflammation, and may even improve conditions like acne, eczema, and rosacea.

Prebiotics feed the beneficial bacteria in your gut.

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that help maintain a healthy microbiome.

Healthy gut. Healthier skin. It’s not a magic cure—but it’s an important piece of the puzzle.

As a formulator, I can tell you actives only do so much on their own. Collagen quality, skin repair, and dullness are all downstream of your gut health — what you feed it shows up on your face weeks later.

But once your gut is doing its part, knowing how to actually layer your actives is what takes the results the rest of the way. Retinol, vitamin C, acids — used wrong, they cancel each other out or wreck your barrier. Used right, they compound.

Want the exact actives I pair with gut-support habits? Comment “ACTIVES” and I’ll send you the details.

Your rosacea isn’t random. It’s a message.

In deeper skin tones, redness doesn’t always look like textbook rosacea — it can show up as warmth, bumpiness, or a dusky flush that’s easy to dismiss or misdiagnose. But the root cause is often the same: inflammation starting in the gut, showing up on the skin.

As a doctor working with skin of colour, I see this pattern constantly — flares that get written off as “sensitivity” when the real driver is what’s happening internally. Fix the input, calm the output.

Does your skin flare when your gut is off? Tell me in the comments — I read every one. Save this for later.

If you’re not patch testing your skincare, you’re taking a gamble with your skin.

That “miracle” product could leave you with redness, itching, swelling or a full-blown allergic reaction—and you won’t know until it’s too late.

When should you patch test?
✔️ Before trying any new skincare product
✔️ Before introducing actives like retinoids, AHAs/BHAs or vitamin C
✔️ If you have sensitive skin, eczema or rosacea
✔️ When using hair dye or lash/brow products

How?
Apply a small amount behind your ear or on your inner forearm for 24–48 hours before using it on your face.

A 2-minute patch test can save weeks of skin recovery.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Premium formulas often combine superior UV filters with antioxidants, DNA repair support and skincare ingredients that protect beyond just preventing sunburn.

🤍 Ranavat Brightening Mineral Sunscreen – A beautifully elegant mineral SPF that leaves a radiant finish while helping brighten the complexion without a heavy white cast.

🩵 Medik8 Advanced Day Ultimate Protect – More than sunscreen; it’s packed with powerful antioxidants to defend against UV rays, pollution and premature skin ageing.

💛 Mesoestetic Pigment Control SPF – One of my top picks for pigmentation-prone skin, offering very high protection while helping minimise UV-triggered melasma flare-ups.

💚 iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF – A science-backed formula combining broad-spectrum UV protection with antioxidants and DNA-supporting ingredients to help defend against environmental damage.

Luxury SPF isn’t about the price tag—it’s about advanced formulations, cosmetic elegance and ingredients that work harder for your skin.
