Researchers have published new findings demonstrating that combining lung ultrasound with venous excess ultrasound (VExUS) may help clinicians better predict outcomes in patients admitted with acute decompensated heart failure.

The study, which included Dr Hatem Soliman Aboumarie, Consultant in Anaesthetics and Critical Care at Harefield Hospital, highlights the value of serial ultrasound assessment for improving early risk stratification.

New research from clinicians at Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals has explored whether total arterial revascularisation (TAG) offers a long-term survival advantage over single arterial grafting (SAG) in patients with moderate left ventricular dysfunction undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Drawing on data from 1,866 patients, the study found that while total arterial grafting is a safe and feasible approach, it was not independently associated with improved long-term survival after adjusting for patient characteristics. The findings highlight that long-term outcomes are influenced more by individual clinical factors than by grafting strategy alone.

Congratulations to Mr Sunil Bhudia, Mr Shahzad Raja, Dr Albaraa Al-Holy and Dr Nandor Marczin on this valuable contribution supporting cardiac surgery and patient care at Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals.

Dr Jo Feary, Consultant Respiratory Physician at Royal Brompton Hospital, recently spoke at an All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Respiratory Health roundtable, calling for a national screening programme for engineered stone workers following a rise in cases linked to quartz kitchen worktops.

As one of the UK's leading experts in occupational lung disease, Dr Feary is currently treating around 80% of the UK's known engineered stone silicosis cases. She highlighted the importance of early diagnosis, improved health surveillance and stronger workplace protections to help identify disease sooner and better support those affected.

Congratulations to our consultants Dr James Tonkin, Dr Justin Garner, Professor Philip L. Molyneaux, Professor Pallav L. Shah and Dr Christopher Orton on their contribution to this important research exploring the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the lung microbiome.

The study found that while patients with persistent respiratory symptoms or radiological abnormalities after COVID-19 showed subtle changes in their lung microbiome, these differences were not strongly associated with ongoing clinical outcomes, providing valuable insights into the long-term impact of COVID-19.

We are pleased to share new research exploring the future priorities for lung volume reduction treatment in people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), with contributions from several Royal Brompton and Harefield consultants.

This research prioritisation exercise brought together people with COPD and healthcare professionals to identify the most important unanswered questions and help guide future studies in this area.

Using an approach based on the James Lind Alliance methodology, the findings highlight key priorities across patient selection, treatment optimisation and ongoing care.
