Stroke Awareness Month: Progress Is Still Possible Years After Stroke
Five years after a severe haemorrhagic stroke, 4 years in long-term neurorehabilitation, and after 8 months of intensive therapy with our INTENSE therapies MDT team, she completed her first Sara Steady stand with two of our therapists.
This was not one single moment.
It was built through consistent, focused rehabilitation targeting:
✔️ lower limb strength
✔️ postural control
✔️ trunk alignment
✔️ midline orientation
✔️ weight-bearing tolerance
✔️ transfer sequencing
The long-term goal is to progress from wheelchair and hoist-based care towards safe Sara Steady standing transfers with her carers at the care home.
This first stand is a huge clinical milestone — but not the finish line.
For Stroke Awareness Month, this is an important reminder that stroke recovery is not always quick, linear, or predictable.
But with the right input, the right intensity, and the right goals, meaningful progress can still happen.
A huge credit to her determination, resilience, and trust in the rehab process.
Rehab works when it is specific, structured, consistent, and ambitious.
