The Chiswick’s Novel Prescription to Thank Nursing Staff

Tuesday 12 May was International Nurses’ Day, a campaign supported by The Royal College of Nursing to celebrate and recognise the work of nurses in the UK and throughout the world.

The nursing team here at The Chiswick are an invaluable members of our staff team and at the very heart of the care we provide. We simply couldn’t manage without them working seamlessly, as they do, with our healthcare providers.

What more apt way was there to thank them than with a special prescription? In this case, not a drug – although it could be addictive – but ‘Prescription Chocolate’? This tasty treat even came with its own instructions to be read before consuming. Side effects could include ‘cheeks hurting from too much smiling’ and ‘sudden healing powers’. There was also a health warning: ‘contents my disappear faster than you meant them to. Please do not panic. This is completely normal’.

We hoped it brought a smile, a few minutes of well-deserved indulgence and a feel good factor. It was one small gesture from all of us here at the Chiswick Nursing Centre to those whose role is so central to what to we do, it even features in our name.

One-to-One Visits Bring Comfort and Connection

At The Chiswick Nursing Centre, our care is all-encompassing. We want every resident to be as well cared for and happy as they can possibly be. This not only means meeting their medical needs but their mental wellbeing too. Maintaining social contact can make a meaningful difference in residents’ daily lives.

As part of our approach, the Chiswick’s activities’ coordinators deliver tailored one-to-one visits. Our aim is to ensure that every resident—regardless of mobility or ability—can experience engagement, comfort and connection.

These personalised sessions are carefully designed around each resident’s interests, abilities, and limitations. Not everyone wishes to join group activities whilst others may be unable to do so. Our one-to-one visits provide an essential alternative - bringing meaningful interaction directly to their rooms.

Typically lasting between 10 and 30 minutes, the sessions offer a wide range of benefits. From reminiscence therapy and sensory activities to bedside hobbies and simple companionship, each interaction is crafted to support emotional wellbeing, stimulate cognition, and reduce feelings of isolation.

Careful preparation involves integrating activities into individual care plans. Our offer is shaped by understanding personal histories, preferences and needs. The activities team ensures that every interaction is not only enjoyable but also purposeful and supportive of overall care.

Technology also plays a part. Coordinators can play residents’ favourite music or films, through the use of I-Pads, often reflecting cultural background and personal tastes. These familiar sounds and images can spark memories, encourage conversation and create moments of joy.

For one resident, a love of vintage Bollywood films has become a highlight of her one-to-one sessions. As classic songs play, she sings along effortlessly, recalling every word. An activities coordinator gently provides a soothing hand massage with essential oils - combining sensory comfort with cherished memories.

Through these dedicated one-to-one visits, The Chiswick Nursing Centre continues to demonstrate how personalised care and thoughtful engagement can transform ordinary moments into something truly special.

We regularly discuss the importance of exercise to maintain good health, mobility, flexibility and brain function.

This was amply demonstrated when Ria from Chair Yoga Club visited the Chiswick Nursing Centre. The room was packed with residents and our Activities Co-ordinators, Sharon, Diana and Chris joined in and assisted residents.

Chair Yoga Club provides energising and engaging seated Yoga Flow exercise classes in care homes, community groups and individuals at home. The activites embrace gentle, physical exercise to increase or maintain muscle mass, improve breathing and stimulate brain function. As important, is the social interaction to enhance communication, happiness and mental wellbeing.

Our one-hour session began with a breath exercise as the instructor encouraged everyone to slow down their breathing and connect within. Next, came some seated gentle yoga exercises and positions such as sun and moon salutations – sun salutations awaken the body and moon ones, soothe. Soft but rhythmic music played in the background to help us all along.

Other exercises involved the use of small items of equipment such as therapy bands for gentle stretching and hand therapy balls, at this session bean bags.

Finally, a cool down session, including a calming, visualisation meditation. If a few nodded off at this point, apparently, it is quite common.

The energy levels in the room rose again once everyone realised how much they had accomplished. There was a lot of ‘high-fiving’ as well as the many smiles that showed happiness and wellbeing had definitely been achieved.

Once a month, on a Friday afternoon, there is palpable excitement around The Chiswick Nursing Centre. The reason? It’s bingo time!

Bingo has become a real favourite for residents and staff alike. As soon as our activities’ coordinators set up the cards, dabbers are at the ready and eyes are down. You can feel the competitive spirit and enthusiasm as participants strive to win the token prize of the day. It might only be a hairbrush or bottle of hand lotion but it’s the triumph that counts.

There is far more to the session than simply calling out numbers. It’s a lively, social occasion packed with chatter, concentration and plenty of friendly rivalry. The familiar rhythm of the game helps keep minds sharp, supports memory and coordination, and gives everyone a reason to shout “LINE!” with confidence.

But the real prize is the laughter. Our bingo caller (on this occasion, Sharon) keeps the atmosphere buzzing. Competitors join in to complete the classic calls like “Two little ducks – twenty two!” and “Legs eleven!” (often with a whistle) echoing around the room. You can see the residents listening intently, dabbing enthusiastically and waiting in suspense to see if they have landed a line… or the ultimate glory of a full house!

So it’s never an ordinary bingo session at The Chiswick; it’s an afternoon of smiles, connection and joy, and we wouldn’t have it any other w

Chiswick Residents Are Big Fans of Chinese New Year
Residents at The Chiswick Nursing Centre learned a lot about Chinese culture and the Year of the Horse when they were visited by Ava Li and Jessie.

Everyone was handed a vibrant coloured fan and shown how to shake it open to make a noise. They were taken through a few gentle moves (good for manual dexterity) before the troupe performed a dance in celebration of the Year of the (Fire) Horse. Those born under this sign are said to be confident, energetic and independent but dislike being reined in!

Our audience was enraptured by the delicate movements, the striking costumes and the enigmatic smiles of the dancers.

Chinese New Year 2026 began on 17 February and celebrations can last up to 16 days.

We can always find a good excuse for a party at The Chiswick Nursing Centre and a post-Valentine’s celebration was just the job.

There was vintage music provided by ‘Lipstick on Your Collar’ who sang everything from Elvis to Abba, finishing up with ‘Sweet Caroline’. The finale had all of us with our hands in the air – and one resident dancing, as she had done throughout the entire performance.

Everyone was impressed by the singer, not only for her voice and energy, but because she had taken the trouble to go round and personally greet every resident before she started singing.

Mocktails, complete with paper parasols, added to the party atmosphere and there were love heart sweets for everyone to enjoy, which they certainly did!.

Valentine’s Day itself had not gone unobserved. Cards circulated and residents took part in a cake decorating session where cupcakes were suitably decorated with hearts and a lot of love.

It was a busy day at The Chiswick Nursing Centre when Ally, Will, Ed, Mortician and Gomez, escorted by Sally, arrived for a visit.

They were not friends or relatives they were slightly more unusual than that. Ally, Will and Ed are Ackie Monitor Lizards and Mortician and Gomez, Carpet Pythons. Sally helps to look after them at Darwin’s Kingdom, a wildlife educational charity which has brought a wide variety of reptiles and other creatures to us on a number of occasions.

Snakes often engender an initial fear factor but once residents plucked up the courage to touch them, they were entranced by their warmth and smoothness. The snakes soon coiled themselves around arms and wheelchairs.

The Ackie Monitor Lizards, which are Australian natives, were accompanied by some smaller Geckos. These also proved very popular.

Sally, who has a passion for animal behaviour, was brilliant, taking time to explain about the origins, lifestyles, habits and characteristics of all of these fascinating reptiles.

Animals always seem to have a soothing effect on people, which is one of the reasons that we are always happy to welcome back Darwin’s Kingdom to The Chiswick.

Chiswick’s Burns Celebration was a toe-tapping, heart-warming affair led by none other than George the piper – a man with royal credentials. George once played the bagpipes for the late Queen Elizabeth II prior to her 90th birthday tea, and he brought that same regal flair to our festivities.

The afternoon kicked off with stirring renditions of The Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond, the Scottish melodies echoing through the building. The sound sparked smiles and memories, especially for one resident and their loved one, who fondly reminisced about trips to Scotland and the Highlands.

Hands were soon clapping and toes tapping as George launched into The Dashing White Sergeant, before rounding off with the most famous Burns poem of all – Auld Lang Syne. And just when you thought the fun was over, residents danced along to one of their favourite rock n’ roll artists, Elvis.

The afternoon ended on a perfectly Scottish note with a wee dram and some delicious shortbread – the ideal finish to a truly bonnie celebration.

Residents at The Chiswick Nursing Centre are having a whale of a time playing indoor ball games.

The specially adapted sessions include volleyball, skittles and table tennis. The games are proving to be excellent exercise for maintaining dexterity and co-ordination, improving mobility, getting the blood pumping and keeping minds alert.

Those taking part are simply loving it as the smiles on their faces demonstrate. What’s more, no-one shows the least sign of having lost their competitive edge.
