This Canadian hiking trail takes you onto Earth’s mantle—and the rock is literally rusting. 🤯🇨🇦

At the Tablelands in Newfoundland, ancient plate collisions exposed rock from deep inside the planet. Iron gives the surface its rusty orange colour, while underneath lies dark green peridotite.

Water slowly alters the rock into serpentine, creating green and black veins. The metal-rich, nutrient-poor soil makes it difficult for plants to grow, leaving a strikingly bare landscape beside green hills.

Scientists tracked what happens to runner’s-high-related chemicals during an actual marathon — and one stood out.

Anandamide, a chemical produced by your body’s endocannabinoid system, increased as the marathon progressed. The runners also reported greater euphoria and lower anxiety than walkers.

For years, the runner’s high has been heavily associated with endorphins. Research like this is helping scientists understand the potentially important role of the endocannabinoid system.

In May 1967, Stefan Michalak was prospecting alone at Falcon Lake in Whiteshell Provincial Park, about 90 minutes east of Winnipeg. He reported two glowing craft. One landed. When he touched it, it took off and blasted a grid pattern of burns through his shirt into his chest. He walked out of the bush sick, went straight to a hospital, and the burns were photographed on the spot.

What makes this case different is who investigated: the RCMP, the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Department of National Defence, and the US Air Force's Condon Committee. They found scorched soil at the landing site, and a sample tested radioactive. Nobody could prove what happened — and nobody could fully explain it. The file was closed as unsolved.

Fifty years later, the Royal Canadian Mint put the Falcon Lake Incident on a $20 silver coin. It glows in the dark — the first Canadian coin that ever did.

The landing site is still unmarked in the bush above the lake. The Falcon South Shore Trail runs 6.3 miles of rolling dirt and granite along the same shoreline.
