As a nutritionist, here are 3 foods I tell every postpartum client to eat
- mackerel or any oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, trout once per week. If you're veggie, choose walnuts daily instead and consider a supplement
- lentils are a good source of iron. Eat with foods rich with vitamin C to help absorption.
- chia seeds are fibre power houses to help prevent constipat1on. When you increase your fibre intake, make sure to increase your water too!

If you just found out you're pregnant, here's the first thing I'd tell you as your nutritionist:
1) folic acid - 400mcg daily, from preconception if possible but its not too late if you only found out you're pregnant today
2) daily vitamin D supplement - 10mcg - you don't need more unless suggested by your gp
3) check out which nutrients for you (as mum) need to stay well as well as your child's growth and development
4) check skincare products and medications and stop taking them if they are unsafe for pregnancy - you may be surprised!

Iron is so important during pregnancy.

For the production of red blood cells and it supplies oxygen to the cells.

Low iron status in pregnancy is associated with low birth weight babies and premature death. All pregnant women will be screened at antenatal booking to see if they need to take an iron supplement in pregnancy.

Good sources:
Red meat, fish, beans & lentils, peas and leafy vegetables, tofu, dried apricots and breakfast cereals

Iron is important for all women. We should be getting 14.8mg daily from food. If you're plant-based, eat iron-rich foods alongside foods rich in vitamin C for better absorption.

Happy pancake day!!! 🥞

This banana pancake recipe is delish and so satisfying.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying your typical pancake but i personally love these ones which leave me so much more satisfied. More in my newsletter on this that went out this morning!

They have bananas, eggs and flour in and i make my own berry coulis which contains chia seeds, mixed seeds, water and some honey.

Easy Fish Curry by me, a Registered Nutritionist.

Don’t be put off by the ingredients list, most are herbs and spices which you will most likely have in your cupboard. And if you don’t.. I highly recommend them for flavouring food.

Ingredients:

2 frozen white fish fillets

1 large white onion, finely chopped

1 lime, juiced

1 tsp ground turmeric

2 tsp ginger and garlic paste

1 tsp chilli powder

2 tsp ground cumin

2 tsp ground coriander

2 tbsp tomato puree

½ butternut squash

3 carrots, chopped

400ml coconut milk

Small bunch coriander (fresh), roughly chopped

Brown rice

Method:

1.Marinade the fish in a bowl with ½ tsp salt and lots of black pepper, half juice of lime and half the turmeric. Stir to combine and set aside.

2. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the onion until softened, about 8-10 mins. Add the ginger and garlic paste, salt, the spices and remaining turmeric and cook for 2 mins. Stir in the tomato puree. Tip the butternut squash and carrots into the pan.

3. Add coconut milk, 200ml water and simmer for 10 minutes until it thickens.

4. Add the fish to the hot coconut sauce in the pan and cook for 6-8 mins until the fish is opaque and cooked through. Flake the fish with a fork in the curry or leave it in chunks if you prefer.

5. Serve with brown rice, squeeze in the remaining lime juice and scatter with fresh coriander.
