National Institute for Health and Care Excellence We are an independent body providing evidence based guidance to improve health and social care.

Since 1999, NICE have provided the NHS, and those who rely on it for their care, with an increasing range of advice on effective, good value healthcare, and have gained a reputation for rigour, independence and objectivity. In April 2013 NICE gained new responsibilities for providing guidance for those working in social care.

For years, Sharon experienced symptoms of PMOS but felt they were something she simply had to live with.

In the latest NICE Talks podcast, Sharon shares her experience of living with PMOS and helping to develop NICE's new guideline alongside clinical experts.

Gavin talks about the heart failure device that remotely monitors his heart.

“I’ve got a new lease of life, and I’ve got to meet my grandson, which is the most precious gift of all.”

Gavin’s story is a powerful reminder of the difference healthtech can make when it reaches the people who need it most.

After living with heart problems for much of his life, Gavin joined a clinical trial using TriageHF technology to remotely monitor people with heart failure. The implanted device detected warning signs before Gavin had noticeable symptoms, prompting his clinical team to act quickly. That early intervention helped put him on the path to a heart transplant and, ultimately, a dramatically improved quality of life.

Importantly, the clinical trial Gavin took part in at Manchester was used by NICE to help develop its guidance on algorithm-based remote monitoring in people with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

This time on , we discuss teplizumab for NHS use, the first treatment to delay the onset of symptomatic type 1 diabetes by an average of nearly three years:

NICE has recommended teplizumab for NHS use — the first treatment to delay the onset of symptomatic type 1 diabetes by an average of nearly three years.

Leslie lived with heart failure for years, never knowing what each day would bring, reluctant to make plans.

Now, a paperclip-sized sensor transmits daily readings to his clinical team, who can adjust his treatment before a crisis hits. For Leslie’s wife and carer Anne, the technology has meant trading constant worry for the ability to act early, together.

NICE recommended this technology for widespread NHS use, backed by evidence showing a 34% reduction in hospitalisations.

Hear from Leslie, Anne and Dr Andrew Flett as they explain what this technology means for patients, carers and the NHS.

A groundbreaking approach to monitoring heart failure patients remotely has reduced unnecessary hospital admissions by 58%, improving patient experience and saving the NHS ÂŁ4,158 per patient.

“By using remote monitoring data from pacemakers and defibrillators, we can now intervene early and deliver care precisely when patients need it, based on their clinical health data." Dr Fozia Ahmed, consultant cardiologist at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

Last year, 727 livers were donated in the UK after someone's heart stopped. Only 309 were transplanted.

A new procedure recommended in NICE draft guidance today could help close that gap, potentially enabling around 150 more transplants a year.

It works by keeping the donor liver supplied with oxygenated blood inside the body before removal, giving transplant teams the time and information they need to decide whether it's suitable.

The guidance is out for consultation until 27 July. If you or someone you know has been affected by liver disease or has waited for a transplant, your voice matters:

This Alcohol Awareness Week, meet James Halls.

James nearly died after his symptoms were initially missed, in part because of stigma surrounding alcohol dependence.

He survived, founded a charity to support others facing the same challenges, and went on to join NICE as a committee member, helping to shape the national guidance that affects how the NHS cares for people who are dependent on alcohol.

Real experience. Real change. Read his story: https://indepth.nice.org.uk/from-personal-crisis-to-national-change/index.html

We've published draft guidance recommending 2 new diagnostic technologies, Endosure and Endotest, for use in the NHS to speed up endometriosis diagnosis in primary care.

Affecting around one in ten women of reproductive age, endometriosis currently takes an average of more than nine years to diagnose in the UK. These new non-invasive tests offer primary care professionals better tools to identify the condition earlier, without relying on specialist ultrasound expertise.

Both technologies can be used in the NHS during a three-year evidence generation period, with NICE reviewing progress annually.

Women's health is a priority for NICE. This draft guidance builds on our updated endometriosis guideline (NG73), fertility guideline (NG257) and two recently recommended hormonal treatments for endometriosis symptoms.
