I’ve had a number of lovely requests to join book groups to talk about When the Body Whispers and help prompt discussion around some of the themes explored in the book.

As I’m unable to join every group personally, I’ve put together a Reader Discussion & Reflection Guide with questions to help start those conversations.

It explores themes including listening to the body, the relationship between body, brain and mind, stress and trauma, prevention and waiting well, the foundations of wellbeing, the Adaptive Integration Framework, purpose and connection, and how we can take some of these ideas into everyday life.

If you’re reading When the Body Whispers with a book group, I hope this gives you a useful starting point for your own conversations and reflections.

Our brain often interprets the world around us through the lens of our past experiences, beliefs, emotions and expectations.

This has to do with the function of our Reticular Activating System (RAS), a part of the brain that helps filter the vast amount of information we receive every second. One of its roles is to determine what reaches our conscious awareness.

Our life experiences influence what we notice, what we overlook and the meaning we attach to events.

Two people can walk down exactly the same street yet have completely different experiences. One may notice the birds, the trees and the beauty of the environment around them. Another may barely notice any of that and instead immediately notice anything that could represent a potential threat.

The street is the same. What captures each person's attention is different.

As a result, several people can experience exactly the same situation yet come away with completely different perspectives.
