Sober October can be a good opportunity to take a closer look at your relationship with alcohol.

But what if the thought of a month without drinking makes you feel anxious, or you’re already thinking about exceptions?

Kanny Sanchez, Lead Therapist at Priory’s Flourish addiction treatment programme, shares five signs that you could be developing a problematic relationship with alcohol:

⚠ Loved ones have raised concerns about your drinking

⚠ You drink to cope with difficult emotions

⚠ You’ve become secretive about how much you drink

⚠ Alcohol is affecting your work or relationships

⚠ You regularly drink heavily on your own

One sign doesn’t necessarily mean you have an alcohol addiction, but if any of these feel familiar, it could be worth taking a closer look at your relationship with alcohol.

If you’re looking for professional support with alcohol addiction, Priory’s Flourish programme offers competitively priced, therapy-led residential treatment from £315 per night.

“I remember getting this overwhelming urge to just RUN AWAY!” 💬

For years, Jodie thought she simply wasn’t enough. That she wasn’t coping as well as everyone else. That she needed to try harder.

But when perimenopause changed the coping mechanisms she’d relied on for years, her ADHD became louder - bringing anxiety, overwhelm and emotional intensity to the surface.

She wasn’t failing. There was something else going on.

Why I Became a Therapist is a Priory series sharing real stories from the people behind the profession.

10/10/2026

This World Mental Health Day, we’re listening to the real voices behind the profession.

In honour of this year’s theme, ‘Lived Experience Heard: Real Voices, Real Change’, our Why I Became a Therapist series shares the personal experiences, challenges and turning points that have shaped Priory therapists, and how those experiences can influence the way they support others.

Their experiences have helped shape who they are today and, for some, have given them a deeper understanding of what it can mean to feel heard, understood and supported.

“I was somebody that experienced life very intensely, but internally rather than externally.” 💬

Growing up, Priory therapist Jodie Smethem often felt like she had it all together on the outside, while struggling internally.

In this clip, Jodie reflects on masking her ADHD when she was younger, feeling anxious and finding friendships difficult, even when others might not have noticed.

💙 Her story highlights how much can be going on beneath the surface, and the importance of understanding what we're experiencing rather than simply trying harder.

💙 Moving your body can support your mind too!

Exercise isn’t just good for your physical health – it can also benefit your mental wellbeing.

Whether it’s walking, yoga, the gym or team sports, getting active can help to:

✨ Boost your mood
✨ Reduce stress and anxiety
✨ Help you feel more present
✨ Connect with others

How much exercise should you do?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Even a 10-minute walk in the fresh air is a great place to start.

If you can, aim for 30 minutes of exercise at least three times a week. The Mental Health Foundation suggests that regular, low-intensity aerobic exercise can help improve positive moods.

After losing his brother in a drink-drive accident, Alex describes the eight years that followed as a period of self-destruction.

In episode three of Why I Became a Therapist, Alex reflects on how grief changed his relationship with alcohol, and how looking back at his family history helped him recognise patterns of addiction that had been there for generations.

His story explores how grief, environment and family experiences can shape the way we cope – and how recognising these patterns can be part of finding a way forward.
