You may think acupuncture is just for back pain… but acupuncturists treat so much more. Yes, we’re good with musculoskeletal pain and migraines, but we’re also great with digestive issues like IBS and Crohn’s, emotional health like stress and anxiety, poor sleep, fatigue and generally feeling rubbish. The list really does go on!

Often, people come for help with a combination of issues. And this is where acupuncture shines.

Rita has run the Peachy clinic in Crouch end for 14 years, with expertise and empathy.

A reminder for all those people who imagine acupuncture needles are HUGE like hyperdermic syringes! They're actually closer in thickness to a strand of your hair.

But there's power in those needles to heal. 🧡

Pain, whether physical or emotional, has a remarkable ability to amplify itself, creating a cycle that can be both overwhelming and consuming. This magnification occurs through several interconnected mechanisms:

Sensory Amplification: When the body experiences pain, the brain’s pain-processing centres become more sensitive. This heightened sensitivity means that even minor stimuli can be perceived as intensely painful, leading to a disproportionate response to everyday sensations. For instance, a gentle touch might feel excruciating to someone in chronic pain due to this sensory amplification. I see this all the time in my clinic.

Emotional Amplification: Pain often carries an emotional burden, such as frustration, anxiety, or depression. These emotions can intensify the perception of pain, creating a feedback loop where emotional distress heightens physical discomfort, and physical pain exacerbates emotional turmoil. This interplay can make the experience of pain feel more intense and enduring. This is, understandably, very common.

Cognitive Amplification: Our thoughts and beliefs about pain can influence its intensity. Focusing on the pain, anticipating its worsening, or fearing its persistence can all contribute to an increased perception of pain. This cognitive aspect underscores the importance of mental and emotional well-being in managing and mitigating the experience of pain.

Acupuncture can have a powerful impact on pain, how we perceive, experience and emotionally confront it. Chinese medicine provides a toolkit to help break the cycle of amplification, leading to more effective relief and improved quality of life. It is both complementary and alternative.

There are times when we just feel low. Out of sorts. Tired all the time and feeling flat.

It doesn't seem to relate to a particular problem but you find yourself craving sweet things or not feeling hungry at all. Worst of all, you wake up at 4 in the morning and can't get back to sleep because you're ruminating about something that happened at work that day... You may be snappy and short tempered. Feel bloated and uncomfortable.

Sound familiar? You don't feel your doctor can really help and you don't want to start taking tablets. You feel stuck.

Although your symptoms may feel disparate, they will often make sense from a Chinese medicine perspective.

Acupuncture can really help balance you out. It works to deal with the root cause and not simply your symptoms. Increasing energy levels, calming the mind, regulating the gut, and supporting positive mental health.

Acupuncture is very relaxing and patients often start to feel better relatively quickly.

Niggles like this can turn into more chronic conditions if not addressed. But there's no need to live with that discomfort....

It's running season. 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon. And I've seen many patients who'll travel to New York or Paris to run.

Training can be grueling. Even if you follow all the advice, you can still suffer from injuries. One of the most common is runners knee, an overuse injury.

Runners knee is due to improper tracking of the patella and/or poor technique, weak thigh muscles or training errors. It can happen to the most experienced runner.

It's characterized by dull aching pain around or behind the kneecap. Sometimes felt during the run or directly after, and which can become chronic if left untreated.

You can't 'run through it'. Rest, rehab and stretching is essential. Electro-acupuncture works incredibly well in reducing psin and inflammation and improving outcomes.

See a practitioner as soon as you feel a twinge and for maintenance if you're a regular runner. Your body will thank you for it.

There are those of us who imagine that every little ni**le is fatal and others who never go to the doctor even when they’re ill. Of course there’s a balance to be struck and our internal health antenna can sometimes save us.

But there's another kind of health anxiety I, and no doubt many other health practitioners, see all the time in our clinics. It's when patients have real health issues or multiple ones, and are so anxious about their condition/a, their emotions can actually make their physical pain much worse. The brain can increase pain perception inflaming the central nervous system. That's not to say that the pain they experience isnt real - it definitely is - but it's root cause is different.

So as practitioners, we have to identify what's actually going on. It's all pain but how do we treat it best?

Reducing pain and inflammation is what acupuncture is really good at. Addressing fear and anxiety complements this approach.

Talking to patients about their health anxiety is critical. That's where we can directly address and challenge their fears.

Pain is a whole body experience. Whether it comes from the brain or the body, Chinese medicine treats it holistically. Acupuncture is just one of the tools we use, alongside tuina remedial massage, cupping, guasha, herbs and nutrition.

So while health anxiety is normal and can be useful in seeking treatment, it can also exacerbate symptoms.

Sara had been living with back pain for a while when she came for her first treatment. Following her consultation it became clear, there were other related issues; sore neck and shoulders and plantar fasciitis which severely restricted walking and left her in pain daily.

Regular acupuncture, tuina remedial massage and cupping sessions soon relieved her symptoms.

Now Sara comes for maintenance every month to keep her well.

Pain relief and healing are not the same thing.

Pain relief focuses on symptom relief, reducing the initial pain and inflammation. Healing is identifying and correcting why those symptoms exist in the first place. Most patients aren’t aware of the difference.

For example, a patient with a sore lower back may feel better after just a couple of acupuncture sessions, however, that isn’t embedded. It’s just the initial stages of healing. So a few weeks or months later - it comes back.

Healing identifies the underlying cause, which may or may not be the source of the pain they are experiencing. And then works from there.

Healing takes time. To strengthen, fortify or release the underlying issues causing the problem. Otherwise you get stuck in a resolving door of chronic pain, temporary relief and back to pain.

There are issues that sometimes can’t be fully cured, but quality of life can be improved. A truly holistic approach is necessary.

Chinese medicine and acupuncture is designed to finding the source of the problem in that particular patient, healing their body and mind. Not simply their back.
