We welcome the Health Secretary’s recognition that the NHS must build greater resilience against annual summer heat pressures.

Our recent warning highlighted that the NHS is dangerously underprepared for extreme temperatures, with doctors reporting unacceptable conditions for patients and staff as heat events place increasing pressure on services.

🌡️ Extreme weather resilience must now be embedded across the health service. This requires system-level change: strengthening NHS infrastructure, embedding resilience into NHS reform, and upgrading buildings so they can withstand extreme heat and other climate risks.

The NHS must be prepared for the growing health impacts of climate change, protecting patients, supporting staff and ensuring services remain safe and resilient.

If we want better training, we must support educational supervisors.

In our latest next gen blog, consultant geriatrician Dr Nikesh Patel reflects on his research into the experiences of new consultants supervising resident doctors who need extra support.

The findings point to a clear challenge: supervisors are often navigating complex pastoral, professional and workforce issues while still adjusting to consultant life themselves.

Better preparation, clearer handovers, protected time and stronger support networks are vital if we want both resident doctors and supervisors to thrive.
