As draws to a close, RCP president Professor Mumtaz Patel shares her reflections on the week and the importance of ensuring SAS doctors’ voices are heard.

One of the highlights was bringing together presidents from across the medical royal colleges for an interactive discussion on the experiences of SAS doctors and how we can continue to strengthen their voice and representation. Professor Mumtaz Patel was joined by Professor Subodh Dave from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Professor Clare McNaught from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Professor Steve Turner from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part, shared their experiences and contributed to the conversations throughout the week.

📢 NAIF 2026 annual report

The National Audit of Inpatient Falls (NAIF) has published its latest annual report, Beyond hip fracture: reporting on the expansion to include other injuries for the first time. Marking a major milestone for the audit, this is the first NAIF annual report to include a wider range of inpatient fall-related injuries beyond hip fracture, providing new insights into the prevention, assessment and management of patients injured following a fall in hospital.

The report highlights data on falls prevention and post-fall care across trusts and health boards and identifies opportunities to improve patient safety and outcomes. It also introduces a new key performance indicator on timely pain management following an injurious fall.

Key recommendations include:
• strengthening oversight of participation and case ascertainment
• standardising post-fall processes and workforce competency
• ensuring that effective falls governance arrangements and local policies are reviewed against NAIF-recommended practices.
