Body changes can happen for many reasons. Some are welcome, expected, or even deeply desired. But many others aren’t.

Not recognising yourself anymore can feel frightening. Painful. It can leave you wanting to do anything to “fix” your body.

But what if the real question is this:

Is the fear of your changing body really about your body?

Pause and listen to what’s happening beneath the surface.

What are you really afraid of?

Losing control?
Not feeling like yourself?
Being judged?
Not feeling worthy?
Grieving the body you once had?

Those answers may not take the fear away, but they can help you move in the right direction.

The problem isn’t that you’re broken and need fixing.

It’s that you’ve been through something that deserves compassion.

Your body does not need punishment.
It may not even need to be changed.

It may simply need care.
It may need nourishment.
It may need kindness.

Your body has carried you through so much.

Perhaps what it needs most right now is for you to be on its side, not at war with it. 🤍

“Just stop overthinking” isn’t particularly helpful advice.

Rumination is more than having lots of thoughts. It’s a repetitive, abstract style of thinking that often feels productive but rarely leads to resolution.

Change doesn’t necessarily come from finding the “right” answer—it comes from changing how we think.

Instead of asking: “Why am I like this?”

We might ask: “What is happening right now?”
“What is one small, helpful action I can take?”

This shift from abstract analysis to concrete experience helps interrupt the cycle of rumination and reconnect us with the present.

If you find yourself stuck in loops of “why,” notice whether your mind is trying to solve something that isn’t actually solvable in that moment.

Sometimes the next helpful step isn’t another thought—it’s a different way of relating to your thoughts.

Overthinking again? 🌿
I noticed how quickly the mind fills silence with noise. Thoughts stacking, replaying, analysing things that haven’t even happened yet.

So I stepped outside.
Walking slowly. Breathing without trying to fix anything. Just noticing—light through the trees, the sound of footsteps, the space between thoughts.

As a clinical psychologist, I often talk about regulation, grounding, and awareness. But moments like this remind me: sometimes the nervous system doesn’t need explanation, it needs environment.

The forest doesn’t ask questions. It doesn’t demand answers. It simply holds space for everything the mind struggles to organise.

And slowly, things settle. Not because they are solved—but because they are allowed to be quiet for a while.

The "inner critic" is an internalised voice-often shaped by early experiences, expectations, or environments.

It once served a protective role.
But it doesn't always serve you now.

Therapeutic work often involves:
• noticing it
• questioning it
• softening it

And slowly building a more compassionate internal dialogue.

When emotions run high, it can feel like everything is happening at once.

Your heart races.Your thoughts spiral. You feel the urge to react immediately.

This is your nervous system trying to protect you — but you don’t have to react right away.

The STOP skill from DBT helps create a small but powerful pause between feeling and reacting.

That pause can help you slow down, observe what’s happening, and choose a response that aligns with your goals.

Swipe through to learn the STOP skill and save this post so you can come back to it when you need it. đź’›
