Your skin looks dull and tired, so you put together a skincare routine. But anything you put on your skin stings, makes your skin red, and causes breakouts.
This is a trap we see people fall into all the time. You're stuck between trying to improve your skin and making it worse, or leaving it alone and being unhappy with how it looks.
"Is this just how my skin is?"
"Is it always going to be like this?"
"If I just try more products, I'll find the right one eventually, right?"
The answer to all of these questions is most likely: no.
It's not a case of this being your skin now, or finding a miracle product.
It's about something you've been overlooking, which you might not have even known about.
Your skin barrier and skin hydration.
When your skin suddenly changes and becomes easily irritated, it's often a sign of a disrupted skin barrier.
And a disrupted skin barrier leaks water through the surface, leaving your skin dehydrated. This then makes the irritation and sensitivity even worse, in a vicious cycle.
But you can get out of this cycle by restoring your skin's hydration and barrier function:
- In most cases, less is more. Reduce your skincare routine purely to a very gentle cleanser, non-comedic barrier repair moisturiser, gentle hydrating serum, and sun protection
- Reintroduce products slowly as your skin begins to calm, but keep away from strong actives such as retinol at least for 1-2 months
- Speed up and support your skin's recovery with barrier repair treatments like Mesotherapy, and hydrating treatments such as Profhilo
