The Minster Centre

The Minster Centre The Minster Centre is a London UK based training organisation offering courses in counselling and psychotherapy.

The Minster Centre provides professional training in counselling and psychotherapy, and a range of community-based therapy services. The Minster Centre was founded in 1978 as the first integrative training programme in the UK. It has now established itself as the leading Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling Training Institute in Europe. We now cater for around 100 diploma and MA students each

year as well as offering a range of short courses, accreditation programmes and continuing professional development. We specialise in training in integrative counselling and psychotherapy. This means we offer an active engagement with the main psychotherapy traditions:

- Humanistic - the 'person to person' relationship.

- Psychodynamic - the importance of the unconscious and early years.

- The Body - the physical basis of emotion, experience, growth and change, including what neuroscience and attachment studies teach us.

- Transpersonal - the experience beyond our material one, whilst addressing the impact of the social and political environment on our relationships.

Thinking about training as a counsellor?

Join us for an Open Coffee Morning on 3rd September, 11am–1pm for a chance to ask questions and find out more about our Foundation Course, with the option to stay for an interview from 2pm the same day.

The Minster Centre Foundation Course starts Monday 21st September 2026, running Monday evenings from 5.30pm to 9.30pm, from September through to July. It combines rigorous academic grounding with the reflective, experiential practice that defines our integrative approach.

We have just a few places left, and online applications need to be submitted by 31st August to be considered for this year's intake.

We'd love to meet you.

What makes The Minster Centre different from other training providers?

We put that question to our course leaders, and the answer keeps coming back to one thing: how relational and integrative the teaching is.

Theory is never taught in isolation here. It's consistently linked back to your own personal process and history - so as a student, you're not just learning about therapeutic theory, you're learning a great deal about yourself along the way.

It's a distinction our course leaders describe as a real selling point of studying with us, and it shapes the whole learning experience.

It's one of the questions we get asked most.

Self-awareness isn't a nice-to-have in this work. It's what makes depth work possible at all.

Here's an example: if a counsellor hasn't worked through their own fear of conflict, they'll avoid it with clients too, often without realising. The space closes down. And the client feels it, even if they can't name why.

That's why our students engage in therapy throughout the duration of their training. Not a formality. A practice.

Training is genuinely challenging. It brings up historical experience. It also brings up whatever the training itself stirs - theory that hits close to home, feedback that lands hard, clinical material that echoes your own life.

Personal therapy is where all of that gets processed. Not shelved. Not pushed down. Worked through.

Together, training and therapy build the resilience this work actually asks of you.

And it doesn't stop at qualification. The clinicians we admire most keep this practice going throughout their careers.

Because if you can't sit with your own material, how do you sit with someone else's? 💭

Someone's either fully right or fully wrong.

Fully good or fully dangerous.

The middle ground, where most of clinical work actually happens, keeps getting harder to find. Out in the world. Sometimes in the room too.

Melanie Klein gave us language for this 75 years ago ☝️

Klein was writing about infant development in the 1940s. But we know these mechanisms don't stay in the nursery - they shape how couples fight, how prejudice gets inherited across generations, how nations talk about each other.

For us as clinicians, the question isn't just diagnostic. It's practical: can we hold the splits our clients bring into the room? Can we help them own what they've projected, and separate it from what they've wrongly taken in as their own?

Understanding these defences won't dissolve polarisation. But it's a skill clinicians already practice every day, and one the rest of the world could use more of. 🧠

- Delivered live online, so there's no need to travel to us
- Meets UKCP and BACP supervision training requirements
- 7 weekends of teaching (Sept–March), plus supervision practice and written work over the year

Most psychotherapy courses will let you in off the back of a form.

We won't.

Every single applicant to The Minster Centre sits down with a senior staff member before they get a place. Not a box-ticking chat, a proper conversation about whether this is the right training, at the right time, for them.

Why bother?

Because our courses ask a lot of you.

You'll be in your own therapy every week for the whole time you train.

And you'll be sitting with real people's pain from very early on.

That takes more than good grades: it takes self-awareness, resilience, and the capacity to actually reflect on yourself, not just study theory.

A form can't tell us any of that. A conversation can.

We know it's the reason our students are ready for the work, not just qualified for it.

Applications for our September Online Supervision course are open. You can learn more on our website 👉 https://www.minstercentre.ac.uk/course/diploma-in-integrative-supervision-online-september-start/?utm_source=Social&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_campaign=Online_Supervision_Course

Interior designers have completed the Introduction to Counselling Skills course.

That's right.

While, of course, many do join this course before pursuing further training, the ICS course welcomes students from a range of backgrounds. It's built for people who want to enhance counselling skills for other areas of life: in management, in parenting, in friendships, in any work built around people.
