This is one of my favourite stretches at the moment. It's quick and easy and can make a big difference to neck and shoulder aches.

Here's what to do:

1) Sit or stand upright
2) Put your hands on the back of your neck
3) Gently pull your elbows backwards
4) Tilt your head back a little to look at the ceiling
5) Hold for 10 seconds (a lot longer than what I show in the reel!)

If you feel sick or dizzy during the stretch please stop immediately.

I love doing this after a few hours at the computer, or anytime my upper back and shoulders feel tense, sore or stiff.... usually after I've been pushing the buggy with the buggy board 🫠.

For longer lasting change you should also look at exercise including strengthening your back, movement snacks throughout the day, ergonomics such as desk set up, and lifestyle factors such as nutrition, sleep and stress.

Adjust your chair and avoid back ache (and neck ache!) at work.

Here's how I prepare my work station for a comfortable day.

1) Sit on your chair.
2) Adjust the height. You want elbows and forearms level with the desk.
3) Pull your seat under the desk. Think tummy close to keyboard.
4) Move arm rests to suit your preference.
5) Add foot rest if necessary.

Give it a try today!

Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders are something I see regularly in clinic, particularly neck and shoulder pains.

This review includes a long list of factors that contribute to these conditions.

Posture and ergonomics are an important part of the picture, but we also need to consider:
Stress
Social Support
Job satisfaction
Job Security
Shift Patterns
Recovery periods
Variety of movement
Age
Gender
Genetics
Exercise
General Fitness

Although these factors can be part of the problem, they can also be part of the solution.

Recovery from work related musculoskeletal disorders requires a lot more than a new mouse and a few stretches!

πŸ“š Work-related MSK disorders (WMSD) remain one of the biggest occupational health challenges worldwide β€” and healthcare workers are among the most affected.

A new narrative review highlights that low back, neck, and shoulder pain are especially common in professions involving repetitive tasks, sustained postures, manual handling, and high workload demands. Healthcare workers report WMSD prevalence rates of 40–75%, with lower back pain the most common presentation.

Importantly, the review reinforces that risk is not just biomechanical.

πŸ” Contributing factors include:
βœ… Repetitive movement and forceful exertion
βœ… Sustained or awkward postures
βœ… High job demands and low job control
βœ… Poor workplace support and insufficient recovery
βœ… Individual factors including age, fitness, and BMI

πŸ’‘ Clinical relevance for osteopaths

This paper supports a broader biopsychosocial approach to occupational MSK pain. For osteopaths, that means:
β€’ Looking beyond tissue load alone
β€’ Exploring workplace stressors and recovery opportunities
β€’ Supporting graded activity and self-management
β€’ Addressing physical capacity, ergonomics, and movement variability
β€’ Helping patients navigate sustainable return-to-work strategies

The review also highlights growing opportunities for prevention through ergonomic interventions, workplace education, wearable technology, and early MSK support.

Sort your desk out!

If you work from home and suffer with neck and shoulder aches, your desk set up and ergonomics could be part of the problem.

Luckily there are some quick and easy actions that will help you feel more comfortable.

Watch the reel to learn all of my tips!

✴️ Bonus Tip:

You need to move!

The best ergonomics in the world won't help if you're stuck in your chair for 8 hours straight.

We are built to move.

Get up and walk around, do a brief yoga routine, take a lunchtime walk or build in a morning stroll before you start. Your body and mind will feel MUCH better.

Need 1:1 help with neck or back ache? Come and see me at in Walthamstow where I can help you feel pain free and comfortable.
