🌍 To mark World Hepatitis Day, let’s talk about hepatitis.

In this BBC Radio London interview, Professor Patrick Kennedy discusses hepatitis, its different causes, and why liver inflammation can sometimes remain silent for many years.

He also highlights the importance of early testing, timely diagnosis, and challenging the stigma that can still surround hepatitis.

The key message is simple: awareness and early diagnosis can change lives. Many forms of hepatitis can now be treated, cured, or effectively managed.

đź’š Know your risk
đź’š Get tested when appropriate
đź’š Protect your liver
đź’š Help us break the stigma

Myth or Fact: Hepatitis is always caused by a virus

Myth. Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. Although viruses such as hepatitis A, B, C, D and E are common causes, liver inflammation can also be caused by alcohol, certain medications, autoimmune conditions, toxins and metabolic liver disease.

At Leaders in Liver Health, we provide specialist assessment to identify the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment and follow-up.

Cirrhosis is advanced scarring of the liver, but it is not always obvious in the early stages.

Diagnosis usually involves a combination of medical history, examination, blood tests and liver imaging. Tests such as ultrasound, CT or MRI can help assess the liver and look for signs of complications. FibroScan can also be used to measure liver stiffness in a quick and non-invasive way.

In some cases, a liver biopsy may be needed, although this is now used more selectively.

Regular monitoring is very important. It helps assess liver function, detect complications early and guide the right treatment plan. This may include monitoring for varices, fluid build-up, changes in liver function and liver cancer risk in appropriate patients.

With specialist follow-up, cirrhosis can be monitored carefully and managed proactively.

Early diagnosis and regular liver care matter.

Who should consider a FibroScan? đź’š

A FibroScan may be helpful for people with chronic liver conditions such as hepatitis B or C, autoimmune liver disease, MASLD/MASH, or those with risk factors including obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, a history of heavy alcohol use, unexplained abnormal liver blood tests, or a family history of liver disease.

The appointment is quick, painless and non-invasive, usually lasting around 30–45 minutes, including a brief consultation, the scan itself and a review of your results. There is no downtime afterwards, and you can return to your normal activities straight away.

At Leaders in Liver Health, you will receive a personalised report with your fibrosis and steatosis scores, and your clinician will discuss the findings with you, including any recommended next steps.

Contact Leaders in Liver Health today to book your FibroScan appointment.

A kind reminder to look after your liver health đź’š

Your liver works quietly every day, supporting digestion, energy balance, metabolism, immunity and detoxification. Many liver conditions can develop silently, without obvious symptoms in the early stages.

Simple steps can make a big difference:

âś” Maintain a healthy weight
âś” Limit alcohol intake
âś” Check your liver blood tests when advised
âś” Consider a FibroScan if you have risk factors
âś” Get tested for hepatitis B and C if relevant
âś” Seek specialist advice if your liver tests are abnormal

Early detection can help prevent long-term complications.

Your liver health matters — don’t ignore it.
