Poor mental health is not an inevitable part of getting older, and it should never be dismissed as “just ageing”.

The World Health Organization estimates that 14.75% of adults aged 70 and over lived with a mental disorder in 2023, most commonly anxiety or depression. These conditions accounted for 6.8% of the years lived with disability in this age group.

Those figures matter because later-life mental health can still be overlooked. A thoughtful conversation, regular connection and support to speak with a GP or another qualified professional can all be meaningful first steps.

This World Mental Health Day, let’s make space to ask older people how they are really feeling, then give them time to answer. 🧡
