A national direct cremation company has made the headlines this week for all the wrong reasons, having caused real heartache for at least one family: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj4g5xn2qjdo

From our experience of dealing with not dissimilar situations, this comes as no surprise to us.

This case highlights why it’s so important that people fully understand what they’re choosing when arranging a funeral in advance.

A direct cremation can be the right choice for some people, and we provide them ourselves. However, many families tell us that, when the time comes, they realise they still need an opportunity to say goodbye together. Even a simple, informal gathering at the crematorium with just a handful of people can make an enormous difference.

The funeral profession should be helping families make informed choices, not encouraging them towards one option through marketing alone. Every family is different, and every goodbye should reflect the wishes of both the person who has died and those left behind.

The best funeral isn’t necessarily the biggest or the most expensive – but it should always be one that families genuinely understand and feel comfortable with.

Today we opened the doors to our new shop at 77 Maple Road in Surbiton.

White Rose Modern Funerals was created to offer something a little different - a calmer, more modern and more personal approach at a time when it’s needed most. Our new Surbiton premises continues that, designed as a restful, welcoming space where families can feel at ease when they visit.

While the word “funeral” can feel daunting, what we do is really about care, clarity and support. Our shop is simply a place to meet and talk things through in a homely environment.

Surbiton feels very special to us. Nick grew up here, and members of our team are local too, so opening here has been a genuinely personal decision.

It means a great deal to now be part of this community, and to create a quiet, supportive space for families when they need it.

If you’re passing, do pop in and say hello, the kettle is always on - we’re happy to answer any questions you may have and you can pick up a copy of our My Funeral Wishes booklet.

Direct cremation is one of the most talked-about funeral options right now - often described as “simple”, “low cost”, or “no fuss”.

But what does that really mean in practice? And is it always the right choice?

Every day, we speak with families who are trying to find the right balance - not just the simplest option, but something that still feels meaningful and right for them.

For some, direct cremation offers welcome simplicity and space to plan a personal goodbye later. For others, it can feel like something is missing - a moment to pause, reflect, and say goodbye.

The truth is, it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

In our latest blog, we explore:
• What direct cremation really involves
• Why it appeals to so many families
• What some people wish they had known beforehand
• And the growing need for something in between

We also share how our No Fuss Farewell offers a gentle middle ground; simple, calm, and personal, with space for a quiet goodbye.

If you’re thinking about options, or just want to understand what feels right, this may help.
