Can manual therapists make patients worse without touching them?
The words we use, the findings we emphasise and the explanations we give can shape what patients believe about their body.
“Your spine is unstable.”
“Your pelvis keeps going out.”
“You need regular correction.”
These phrases may sound clinical, but they can also create fear, fragility and dependency.
Manual therapy can help build confidence, reassurance and symptom relief.
But the goal should always be to leave the patient less afraid, more capable and more independent.
Before explaining a finding, ask:
What will this patient believe about their body when they leave?
