Migration is not only a journey between places—it is a journey of changing occupations, identities and connections. The occupations that shape our everyday lives often carry stories of culture, family, belonging and history.
For many South and Southeast Asian communities, migration involves weaving together multiple threads: preserving traditions while adapting to new environments, maintaining family roles while navigating new expectations, and creating new identities across generations and borders.
As Occupational Therapists, we have a role in recognising that adaptation is not simply about fitting into a new environment. It is about supporting people to continue engaging in the occupations that connect them to who they are, while enabling opportunities to develop new meaningful routines, relationships and roles.
Through a culturally responsive approach, OTs can help individuals navigate transitions, overcome barriers to participation and maintain a sense of belonging within both cultural and wider communities.
During 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 & 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 (𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗔) 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵, let’s celebrate the evolving threads of occupation, culture and identity, and reflect on how we can support equitable participation for all.
