The theme for World Occupational Therapy Day on the 27 October 2026 is Participation Matters.

Participation Matters highlights the role of everyday activities, roles and routines in supporting health, wellbeing and quality of life. Occupational therapy advances participation by addressing physical, cognitive, emotional, environmental and social factors that influence engagement in occupations that people want, need, or are expected to do.

The World Occupational Therapy Day theme, logo and other translated promotional resources will be added to the WFOT website in the coming weeks and months.

⁉️ What is the difference between stress and anxiety?

Stress and anxiety can affect every part of people's lives, and both can feel incredibly similar: they are both emotional responses, and both involve mostly identical physical symptoms, such as sleeping disturbance, digestive issues, difficulty concentrating, muscle tension, irritability and/or anger.

Hence, knowing the difference is key to finding effective ways to manage them and getting the help that is needed.

Let's walk through the difference between stress and anxiety.

😡😤 Understanding anger

Anger is a natural emotion defined by a strong emotional and psychological response to perceived provocation, threat, or injustice. It is our natural response to a difficult situation or when we feel frustrated. Anger is also closely tied to our survival mechanisms, such as the natural body's 'fight or flight' response to threats (Harvard Health Publishing, 2024).

Anger can accumulate and range in intensity, from slight irritation to rage, becoming excessive and unreasonable (Ohwovoriole, 2026). Anger can also be linked to our past events, such as bullying, trauma, neglect, abuse or discrimination (Harvard Health Publishing, 2024).

For example, people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may feel 'stuck' in a survival mode and respond to any triggers and stressful situations with full rage (National Centre for PTSD, 2025).

This type of anger may create serious problems at home, at school, or in the workplace. It can also affect their self-image and their role in society.

‼️Sensory Processing Disorder in adults – What an Occupational therapist needs to know?

Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a neurological condition that affects how the brain processes, integrates, and responds to sensory information (Haas, 2023).

🤸 We all interact with the environment through our five external senses of vision, hearing, touch and smell, as well as three internal senses of vestibular (movement and balance), proprioception (body awareness and position in space) and interoception (awareness of internal physiological state, such as hunger, thirst or temperature).

🧐 SPD is not recognised as a standalone diagnosis in the International Classification of Diseases, 11th revision (ICD-11) or Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), but as a core symptom of other conditions, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (ATC, 2025).
